Trudeau ‘happy to talk’ about NAFTA with Trump

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he’s is open to renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

At a press conference in Sydney, N.S., on Thursday morning, Trudeau told reporters he called U.S. president-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his win, and to extend an invitation to visit Canada.

During the “brief” phone call, Trump “expressed warmth towards Canada,” Trudeau said. “It was a strong beginning to what will be a constructive relationship.”

During the campaign, Trump promised to renegotiate his country’s trade deals aggressively, including the North American Free Trade Agreement.

When asked what he hopes to gain by pre-emptively agreeing to re-open NAFTA before Trump has officially asked to do so, Trudeau told reporters in Sydney that continuing to keep the U.S. as a strong trading partner is important to both countries.

“If Americans want to talk about NAFTA, I’m happy to talk about it,” Trudeau said.

During the campaign, Trump faced withering criticism over misogynistic statements caught on tape. He is also facing accusations of sexual assault from a number of women.

When asked what he told his daughter Wednesday morning about Trump’s win, Trudeau avoided answering the question directly.

“I told my kids that our relationship with the U.S. is a deep and positive one,” Trudeau said. “I got to stay that to a hall filled with tens of thousands of kids at We Day.”

“We’re going to work constructively together on this relationship, because that’s what people expect,” he said.

Maybe as part of his visit, Trump can offer a humanitarian airlift of the butthurt celebrities who wish to emigrate

Excellent. Our best trading partner ever. If we both withdraw from NAFTA, we can negotiate "Fair Deals".

Canada gets breaks on drugs somehow. We should look into it more. We're getting screwed on drugs.

Trump can serve a one-year notice to his NAFTA partners that we are getting out. I read the treaty, and it says he can do this.

I expect him to do so shortly after taking office. This will set the clock ticking and “the art of the deal” will take over. He will use the leverage to sign a much better deal.

“Now, Mexico, before I sign this....you ARE going to pay for that wall, correct?”

We're getting screwed on drugs.
Big time. Just tried to fill a prescription for a skin ointment and the co-pay was $148. I refused the order, and asked the pharmacist if it was made of gold.
He suggested a $5 tube of diaper rash cream and it did the job.

I'll never forget when my dentist wrote a prescription for an antibiotic that cost $40. My pharmacist said you should have asked him to write one for Penicillin instead...$4.00. Will do the same job.Who knew....Now I look up all my prescriptions and talk to my pharmacist.

Isn’t the “break on drugs” related to socialist medicine?

I voted for Trump, supported him all the way. I’m optimistic, but still in a “show me” state of mind.

Sort of, Health Canada (or whatever it’s called) is a big customer, and they negotiate the price. The drug companies are willing to do so because they want that customer. It doesn’t apply so much to individuals, but it would be nice if Medicare and Medicaid could do it to (it’s our tax money they’re spending after all). Of course, that is forbidden by the law GW Bush signed, fiscally prudent guy he was, doncha know.

Better to be in a "standing by" mode rather than a "I can't believe my eyes" mode had Hitlery won.

True, But if Trump doesn’t follow through, I’m not voting for him again just because he talks a good game.
