Electoral college: What is it, how does it work and is it really the best system?

"And the system technically allows the electors to hijack the result, since it is not certain the electors will vote the way their state does.

Although around 30 of the 50 states have passed laws that mean their electors must vote according to the popular vote in their state – the punishment for not doing so is can merely be a fine. This means they could potentially defy the electorate's choice." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-elections/electoral-college-how-does-it-work-us-election-day-2016-states-votes-donald-trump-hilalry-clinton-a7404086.html

Worked like the Founders intended. They were geniuses.

Absolutely it is the best system. Otherwise, NY, FL, CA, IL, and PA could choose the president, while the rest of the country would have to pay the bills.

The article’s author is an idiot. The electoral college was not put in place to “ensure regional balance”, it was put in place to make sure large states like New York did not have disproportionate influence on federal elections much like the reason each state has only 2 senators.

The Electoral College is an important element of what makes us a Republic instead of a Democracy.

These “lets do away with the EC” think pieces come up every four years, and have since at least 1980, which is when I started to pay attention.

Leave the Electoral College Alone!
It's In The Constitution
It Works!

This guy was a guest on Medved’s show about a month ago. He claims the electoral college came about due to the southern states fear that the north would always win the popular vote. You guessed it, due to slavery:

Truth be told I think Medved would like to see the EC abolished too.

Yes, the once in a lifetime genius founders of this country got this right, unlike the accusative phony “press” that bring this up every election cycle—but only when their side loses. What a joke.

Well the electoral college is the popular vote of each state. Trump won the popular vote in 30 out of 50 states.
They want NYC and Cali to pick the president every four years while the middle class red states and counties foot the bill via high taxes for their social programs?!

Yea whatever.

Hate to pour cold water on it, (well, not really) but:

Amending the Constitution requires a 2/3 vote on a joint resolution in both houses of Congress. Republicans hold majorities in both houses.

The next step is to have the amendment ratified by 38 of 50 state legislatures. Republicans control 31, democrats control 11, and there are 8 split legislatures.

Democrats can't succeed in amending the constitution for the foreseeable future.

SImple but effective, tell your friends when they bring this electoral abolition subject up. Democracy is 2 wolves and a lamb voting on what it for supper.

Hillary highjacked the election by having 60,000 felons pardoned and made eleigble to vote thereby winning VA by less then 10,000 votes.

But what think ye of “Although around 30 of the 50 states have passed laws that mean their electors must vote according to the popular vote in their state – the punishment for not doing so is can merely be a fine.”

That's a minor matter, as I see it.

The Electoral College is a bulwark against tendency of the federal government to want to do away with differences between the states, and treat the entirety of America as just one huge state, with the individual states as quaint but functionally meaningless historical relics.

It also acts as a firewall against vote fraud, which is a growing problem.

OT, but these electronic voting machines are a deadly threat to our freedoms. Too much unaccountable, invisible code operating out of sight.

There are certain systems where you want simplicity over every other consideration. The balloting system is one of those.

I say vote by county. Most counties won in the state gets the electoral vote. Congress stays the same and the senate is one 6 year term and out.

This does one thing. It prevents widespread fraud as it becomes contained to one county.

btw HRC general popular vote lead is so minuscule it’s mainly from Cali, that’s when it she went ahead..wee early this morning after West coast and Cali was counted.

So what that ONE leftest state with a lot of people gave her a small popular vote lead. The majority of people in 30 other states voted for Trump over her.
