Chargers’ stadium vote fails miserably, clouding future in San Diego
A ballot measure in San Diego that would have raised hotel taxes to pay for a new Chargers stadium came up far short of the required two-thirds vote Tuesday, leaving the team with an uncertain future in the city.
Measure C, as the initiative was known, would have allowed city officials to raise hotel-room taxes from 12.5 percent to 16.5 percent and use that revenue to pay for a new downtown stadium and convention-center annex next to Petco Park, where the Padres play baseball. But the measure received support from only 41 percent of local voters, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune’s last count, well below the 66.7 percent needed for passage.
Critics of the measure — which the Chargers sponsored and spent millions promoting — contend that the move was nothing but a gift to the team’s wealthy owners, that it underestimated construction costs and that it would not provide a positive economic impact for the city.

Yep, I hope the voters are paying attention. Just as in Pittsburgh, they probably think they voted down public funding of the stadium, when they really just voted down a specific tax source. The next time (again, as in Pittsburgh), the city just won’t ask.
Let the NFL build their own g.d. stadiums. If it such a good deal the NFL can build new stadiums with their own money and keep all of the profits.
They have a pretty good track record of getting it done. As I said, they’ll just top asking for taxpayer permission.
That’s not how the NFL works. They tell the cities to build new stadiums on the city’s dollar and the owner keep all the profits.
The Spano’s are horrible owners and keep putting their thumb in our eyes. Go to LA, go to St. Louis, go to San Antonio, go to Tulsa. Just go and take your third rated owners and record with you.
Let the NFL build the stadium if they think it is such a great money maker.

NO tax dollars should be used for stadiums for the rich.
They have one that is vacant. The Rangers and Astros play exhibition games there at the end spring training. It is weird for baseball and yields a very, very short right field field fence. But for football it would be fine. It seats 65,000.

Because they don’t have to.
On the other hand, the idiots in Arlington, Texas voted to approve a new stadium for the Texas Rangers, when their existing stadium is about 10 years or so old.
