Well, the Founding Fathers envisioned the electoral college as a group of learned citizens, who would exercise independent judgement in electing a president. It has evolved into a system of political loyalists who almost always vote for their party nominee. But the Founding Fathers didn’t want direct popular election of the president.

The founding fathers also did not want someone to be President who was not a natural born citizen.

Naturally a US citizen because they could not be anything else, born here of citizen parents.

Obama told us he was born a British subject.

I am quite certain that is not what they had in mind, they specifically exempted themselves knowing there could not be any natural born citizens for at least 35 years.
