At Last: Cubs win first World Series since 1908 with 10-inning, Game 7 victory

As the late Harry Caray might have said, "It might be ... It could be ... IT IS!"

After blowing a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning and enduring a 17-minute rain delay after the ninth, the Chicago Cubs scored two runs in the top of the 10th and held on to defeat the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in Game 7 of the World Series to win the franchise's first title since 1908.

As third baseman Kris Bryant threw out pinch-hitter Michael Martinez on a soft ground ball, Cubs fans at Progressive Field in Cleveland, outside Wrigley Field in Chicago and around the world celebrated a championship 108 years (or 39,466 days) in the making. Blue-clad Cubs fans filled nearly the entire lower deck behind the Chicago dugout, singing "Go Cubs Go!"

"It happened. It happened. Chicago, it happened," said first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who caught the final out and tucked the ball into his back pocket before joining the celebration. "We did it. We're world champions. I tell ya, we're world champions. I can't believe it."

The Cubs' historic 10th-inning rally started with a single by Kyle Schwarber, who played in all of two regular-season games. Pinch-runner Albert Almora Jr. took Schwarber's place at first and advanced to second on a deep fly ball by Bryant. The Indians then opted to walk Rizzo to set up a potential double play.

Looks like my evil eye didn’t work this time. I was rooting for the tribe because a big libtard at work is a Cubs fan.

10 innings, wow. I went to bed in the 8th inning figuring it was pretty much over.

Why anyone would choose to walk a man to pitch to Zobrist, after watching him the past year and a half is puzzling. I know, double play situation, but he keeps the line moving.

They didn’t win it for Hillary and they didn’t win it for Obama. Way to go Cubs!

LOL. I watched it between watching Hannity. I turned my TV off when the game was at the bottom 8 Inning and the score was 6-3 Cubs. I am glad they won.

I lasted until the end of the 9th around midnight. I had to get up for work in the morning. They should have started the game at 7 pm instead of 8. Too freaking late for eastern time zone folks.

It still was a damn good ball game. Kudos to the Cubs, kudos to the Indians for coming back and fighting to the end.

Now the “Curse of Ricky Vaughn” will haunt the Indians for the next 30+ years. They should have done “The Wild Thing”.

As a long suffering Bills, Sabres, Falcons and Hawks fan I can now say I have hope. If the Cubbies can win so can they!!! Hopefully I won’t have to wait 108 years.

And that was after falling behind 3 games to 1 to the Indians.

They made a mistake putting Shaw back out there after the delay.

Still can’t wrap my head around a pitcher starting game one of the MLB World Series and can’t throw to 1st base to hold a runner..... I never heard of such.

The five all time longest championship droughts now (in the big four) are now (with the Cubs ending their 1908 started drought):
1947-Chicago/St Louis/Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals-NFL-went from 1947 to 2008 without being in an NFL Final or Super Bowl
1948-Cleveland Indians-MLB-in 1954, 1995, 1997, and 2016 World Series
1951-Rochester/Cincinnati Royals/Omaha/Kansas City/Sacramento Kings-NBA-also first and only NBA finals series appearance (their absence from a Finals Series appearance since 1951 is now the longest in all of the Big Four since the Cubs made their appearance in a World Series this fall for the first time since 1945).
1957-Detroit Lions-NFL-last NFL final appearance, have never been to a Super Bowl (longest since the Cardinals played in the 2008 Super Bowl against Pittsburgh).
1958-St. Louis/Atlanta Hawks-NBA-last appearance in NBA Final Series was 1961.

Note: Longest drought in NHL is the Toronto Maple Leafs-last Stanley Cup championship and Finals Series appearance was against the Montreal Canadiens in 1967 (last Original Six season before modern expansion).

How long was the rain delay? I quit watching when they pulled the tarps over the field.
