Amazed, and disgusted, but not surprised. As I've commented before, slavery has existed for thousands of years (probably since the time of Nimrod, if not before The Flood), and it exists today.
Yet, based on movies, the Media, and the general lament, and ridiculous talk about 'reparations', if you grew up in a vacuum - devoid of historical perspective - you'd think slavery was a unique American phenomena.

We were not taught about the historical legacy of slavery for instance. We were taught about Franco's Spain from a Spanish Republican point of view, unaware that the Spanish themselves present a much more sympathetic view of Franco than we do. The Dark Ages were essentially written of as unimportant.
As for America, the decision to go to war in WWII was never even presented from the perspective of the role of the American Firsters. What were their motivations? Pure? Impure? What about Joseph Kennedy? And of course we learned WWII brought the nation from the depression without any dissenting view points on that assumption.
It was though our history books were written by a first year college student, 100% sure of all their bias’ they hold.

Curious that this is not something taught in schools. When you think about it, in the West, we are very very ignorant about that happened in the Islamic world right next to us.

I had this discussion with my daughter’s middle school classmates, and they didn’t believe me. Then I asked who was familiar with the handmaidens and slaves in the Bible, a few hands went up, “Do you realize that was several thousand years before Europeans arrived in America? So slavery predated even the Roman Empire 2000 years ago.”
That indicates a failure of the national education system, public schools and the colleges and universities. Slavery is nearly as old as recorded history. America inherited slavery from the British.
In common usage in America, white means all people of European origin. Jews are counted as white because the ancestors of most American Jews lived in Europe for over a millennium and are a mixture of European and Middle Eastern. Most American Jews “look” white. OTOH, most Hispanics from Latin America do not.
