There is something the Feds call “core inflation”, that’s inflation data excluding food and energy. The stated reason for this exclusion is that food and energy prices bounce around too much.

The stated reason for this exclusion is that food and energy prices bounce around too much."Stated" is right - it's a cop-out. The stock market "bounces around", yet it is tracked with moving averages (200-day, etc.) that give a general idea of direction.
