The Astonishing Ignorance of Young Adults
Daily Signal ^ | October 26, 2016 | Walter E. Williams

Posted on 10/29/2016 5:56:18 AM PDT by detective

Do you wonder why Sen. Bernie Sanders and his ideas are so popular among American college students? The answer is that they, like so many other young people who think they know it all, are really uninformed and ignorant. You say, “Williams, how dare you say that?! We’ve mortgaged our home to send our children to college.”

Let’s start with the 2006 geographic literacy survey of youngsters between 18 and 24 years of age by National Geographic and Roper Public Affairs.

Less than half could identify New York and Ohio on a U.S. map. Sixty percent could not find Iraq or Saudi Arabia on a map of the Middle East, and three-quarters could not find Iran or Israel. In fact, 44 percent could not locate even one of those four countries. Youngsters who had taken a geography class didn’t fare much better.

Many young people seem to be ignorant about almost everything.

They are pretty good at playing video games-sometimes two or three at a time.

They are taught the downside of the American system , but they are not taught the history off man in any decent way to put our current existence into context. they have no context, and context is everything

It is the result of Government indoctrination in public schools, and Hollyweird.

Furthermore, the ideas of liberalism lock down the mind to looking at ideas outside of the box. As soon as their brain starts to meander they immediately go into self accusation mode (This training people to self accuse themselves when they wander off the plantation is lefts most insidious thing). As a result they have no context and no ability to think outside the rails of leftism

One of the Podesta emails said that a democrat strategy is to have an “unknowing and compliant” electorate. Looks like they have gone a long way toward that goal.

My own daughter yesterday: “those emails were just about yoga...” This is from a homeschooled young lady we tried to raise to think for herself. In politics, she has succumbed to the groupthink of social media.

Some of us 50+ guyz at work often comment, if there were ever another war, particularly on our soil or if we had economic collapse...whatever the case, these youngins would literally starve. If they're not starving, they will be queued up in a gubbamint food/water line waiting for handouts.

Clueless. Most young guys cannot change a tire on their car, chop wood, start a fire and or cook over it. Gather water, filter it, sanitize it.

Oh well.

It’s not just that they don’t know. They don’t know that they don’t know.

I don't understand how even a reasonably curious young person wouldn't learn those things on their own, even if the worthless school system didn't teach them. I admit to being a little odd in that regard -- I used to read the dictionary and encyclopedias for fun -- but I can't imagine going through life so ignorant about the world around me.

Where is your context? How do you understand your temporal and geographical place in the world? How does anything make sense if there's no structure to put it in? And how do you connect one idea to another when you don't have any ideas to begin with?

Hardly surprising.

Only a few decades ago, the goal of US education was to teach students to think for themselves.

Today it is conformity.

They don’t have any common sense either.

The heck with what they can or can’t find on a map.

Those are just facts and they can look them up.

These kids don’t even know how to function as responsible adults in a society.

It has got to be a generational thing. The movies they watch, the books they read are all soap operas about one thing or another. This is the snowflake generation - if any real disaster ever occurred they would be in a state of shock and out of commission. The future needs old people to keep the young alive.

Not just young people. Our former Secretary of State thought Mosul was on the Syrian border.

Yes, exactly. Cannot sew and repair anything either. I am amazed at how helpless they are.

Cannot read and don’t like to do it, either.

No capacity for deductive reasoning.

We seem to now be a nation with an external locus of control to the nth degree.

I know these comments to not pertain to all young people. I am sure some have strong internal loci of control and use deductive logic/reasoning very well. But the majority? Lost to themselves and to this nation.

All young people should spend a minimum of two years in the military services of this country. Again I apologize to those men and women who are serving and doing a marvelous job. I admire you all!!.
