The Latest: Comey Felt Obliged to Send Letter to Congress

WASHINGTON — The Latest on the U.S. presidential campaign (all times EDT):

10:30 p.m. FBI Director James Comey says he felt an "obligation" to send a letter to Congress advising lawmakers that the bureau is looking into more emails connected to Hillary Clinton after he had testified repeatedly that the investigation was completed.

Comey tells FBI employees in an internal email, obtained by The Associated Press, that he also thinks "it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record."

The FBI is investigating whether there is classified information in new emails uncovered during the sexting investigation of the estranged husband of one of Hillary Clinton's closest aides.

Comey reiterates that "we don't know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails." He also notes he is aware "there is significant risk of being misunderstood" in sending Congress such a letter "in the middle of an election season."

It was only reasonable to inform Congress.

Comey is trying to rehabilitate his reputation/name, nothing more, but it is too late. Resign, Comey, resign!

Comey is telling Congress just to cover his backside.

I expect him to drag this out past the election, and when after the election bad things come out from this about Hillary, Comey will say, “hey, I told you before the election that there were these emails.”

Our government is so incredibly corrupt, it’s like an infection that has gotten out of control.

Weasel words from the Head Weasel! He knows damned well what the “significance” is and that President Trump will prosecute him.

sadly once is too much in his position, to grave an error to further trust his judgement.

according to private sources that Bill O’Reilly says he has, the rank and file FBI were so pissed after the way Comey has politicized this, if he hadn’t written this they were going to leak the information to the press.

Who knows but it sounds credible. Comey is a dirty cop but most FBI agents are dedicated and honest.

...could this new email stuff be a red herring? The breaking news yesterday was Bill’s $66 million dollar shakedown for Bill Clinton Inc. while she was SoS?

I think Comey has stared into the Abyss and saw president Trump. This is all about saving his sorry corrupt ass.

Yeah, they know the significance.

No doubt the first thing the FBI special agents did when they got Huma’s laptop was to scroll through her email folder.

They would quickly get an idea if Hillary was involved and they would recognize things that should obviously be classified.

Now they will go back and go through them methodically one by one and contacting the relevant agencies for classification analysis, which will take weeks or months, but of course they already have an idea of the significance of it.

Is this a laptop turned over by an FBI agent, one that was supposed to be destroyed?
I read something like that here earlier. If that’s the case, wouldn’t that be obstruction by the FBI?
Who knows what was on the ones that were destroyed.

He’s attempting to treat Hillary like she’s a citizen of this country - and NOT it’s Queen.

Either the law applies to all of us equally OR we’re a friggin banana republic. There no in-between.

Comey is just another employee. He reports to the AG who reports to the White House. This is all obama’s doing.

In my opinion.

And Obama is doing this because...?

I swear some people can be negative about anything. I don't see today's news as anything other than beneficial to Donald Trump.

Yes, it certainly could be a distraction. A juicy sex story to take many people’s attention away from boring emails, secret documents, and pay for play. Just save it for later, and in the meantime, VOTE FOR TRUMP.

Everything Comey says is a lie. I wonder what the real story is.
