Vatican to Act as Mediator Between Venezuela’s Dueling Sides
NYT ^ | OCT. 24, 2016 | ANA VANESSA HERRERO and ELISABETH MALKIN OCT. 24, 2016

As President Nicolás Maduro flew to Rome for a hastily arranged meeting with Pope Francis, representatives of Venezuela’s government and a leader of the opposition agreed on Monday to allow the Vatican to mediate a dialogue intended to solve the country’s political crisis.

The accord appeared to mark a pause in Venezuela’s escalating tension, which intensified last week when the country’s electoral council suspended the opposition’s drive for a referendum to recall Mr. Maduro.

This is the first time that the Vatican has succeeded in bringing representatives of the two sides together since it began attempts to intercede in May.

People in Venezuela are suffering. They are desperately trying to replace Maduro. But the socialist regime has used extreme violence and brutal repression to remain in power.

Pope Francis has been supportive of Maduro and his repressive regime. He does not hold them responsible for the suffering they create. Pope Francis blames capitalism.

Pope Francis talks about the poor, but only as a weapon to attack free societies and free enterprise. Pope Francis supports brutally repressive regimes that rule through fear and create suffering and starvation.

This is why Catholics should demand that he be removed as Pope. That is unless Catholics think that their Church is Communist! This Pope is to Catholics as Duterte is to Filipinos

You are right, but before the personal (you did NOT personally attack) attacks on Catholics comes, remember, think about what can be said regarding Americans because of their leader.

I would back the most conservative Bishop we have in a coup and give my life for it, as I would give it for my country.

I didn’t get to vote in the choosing of the pope!!

But we need a John Paul II, and we need to act now.

Translation: Maduro has no shame, socialism is ok, people of Venezuela will continue to suffer under the iron fist of a socialist. Wake up people of Venezuela, you are starting, and it will happen here if Hildabeast is elected.

Yeah, that’ll fix everything.

Sort of like Karl Marx mediating a fight between Lenin and Stalin.

Maduro is stalling for time, desperate to stay in power.

It would be a shame if Pope Francis helps him.

The opposition controlled legislature has voted to declare a coup has taken place in the country because the Maduro regime nullified the legal process of recalling him through a referendum.

Mass demonstrations are planned in the streets Wednesday and at this point there is no guarantee that the police and government red shirt thugs likely peppered with Cuban auxiliaries could stop a sustained effort by millions of people against the regime.

Argentina is chairing the Organization of American States right now (the OAS has denounced the annulment of the recall process) and perhaps President Mauricio Macri of Argentina has brought in the Argentine pope.

The Pope certainly seems to have Marxist tendencies, so maybe he will be a credible interlocutor in Maduro’s eyes. I hope he can do some good to that tragically benighted country so that the Marxist dictatorship in power can be eased out, but I won’t be holding my breath.
