I have several like those pictured. We need a background check to buy a knife? I can’t bring these to NYC? Do they feel safer without these?

Most states have limitations on pocket knife size. At a certain point they become a concealed weapon.
I would almost guarantee you these arrests were gang related.
When they police roust gang figures in order to prevent brawls, melees where people are stabbed or knifed all the time, they run into these knives.
That being the only thing they can charge the gang members with, they do it. It gets them off the streets and prevents deaths and destruction.
You, I, most other FReepers will never get stopped and frisked for a knife.
The NRA is backing a lost cause here. If they win, guess who is at risk. The public at large.

The NYPD actually teaches recruits in yhe Academy how to flick open a locking pocket knife like the SwissArmy Evo series. That way they can arrest the possessor of criminal possession of a gravity knife. And if it takes them twelve tries and they open it on the 13th you will still be arrested and criminal intent is explicit in possessing the knife. It’s why I do not carry my SA German Army knife when I go into the city. Even I can snap it open on the first try.
If someone can put me in touch with someone involved in the suit, they may find some of my information about NY knife law abuse uniquely interesting. Years ago I wrote a broadly-read guide to NY knife law, and it was abused by at least one police department. I’ll dig up the specifics if someone is actually interested in prosecuting the department.
Knife law, the 1950’s scam that keeps on giving. Life Magazine and West Side Story led a campaign against switchblades. There was never any statistical information that made them any more dangerous than other pointy objects, but the campaign cast the mold from which gun control now springs.
The people never got both sides of that argument because the people targeted didn’t have the resources to object, Even if they did, they were identified as thugs and despicable, unredeemable, undesirables by the national media!
I told the wife they needed to stop using "gun violence" and start using a description of the perps like, Black thug violence/Latino gang violence/White trash violence, etc.
Of course doing that would shine a bad light on some protected classes of criminals....
