$47 billion offer to create world's biggest tobacco company

LONDON — British American Tobacco has offered to buy out Reynolds American Inc. for $47 billion in an attempt to gain a strong presence in the U.S., a lucrative market where sales of electronic cigarettes are booming as traditional smoking fades.

The takeover would create the world's largest publicly traded tobacco company and combine BAT's presence in developing countries, where anti-smoking campaigns are not as strong as in the U.S. and Europe, with Reynolds' almost exclusive focus on the U.S.

BAT already owns 42 percent of Reynolds and sells Dunhill, Rothmans and Lucky Strike cigarettes. Reynolds controls about a third of the U.S. market with brands like Newport, Camel and Pall Mall.

The U.S. remains "the largest global profit pool" outside of China, BAT said in a statement Friday. The U.S. is one of the biggest markets for e-cigarettes.

It’s a strange thing for me to see smokers these days. Seems weird when I do see someone puffing on one.

I don’t think tobacco productd are a good profit source long term, i really don’t.

In fact i think it is a horrible place to be.

Just my opinion.

I think you underestimate just how much they smoke in China, Russia and really all of Asia. They aren’t showing signs of slowing down either.

They aren't talking about another product major corporate people want to move into - Weed, man, weed!! - as well as some of the non-"recreational" components, some of which may have promise as non-addictive pain killers.

Well that is what i had thought.

However i am in Asia now and it seems even here people are turning against smoking.

Limited experience. Just my opinion.

Former smoker here, too.

I roll my own tobacco where ever I feel free to ....You do not see them because a factory cigarette is about .20-.40 cents a piece.....remember the black dude selling “cigarettes” on the New York side walk and was subdued by police and he died?....OH EVERYONE FORGOT ALL READY?
I smoke when and where I choose ...I choose to not spend my cash where I am snubbed and the tax loss from cigarette sales is not yet figured as tax hikes have been HUGE to offset the loss from quiter’s. Now “vaping” is the “nicotene” rage ...people are stupid ...get “pipe tobacco” no flavors/coloring etc... no complex carcinogens from added chemicals like 5-10 dollar a pack chemical sticks. I felt like writing something near and dear to me.

47 billion seems WAY low to me... a trillion would be fine...

Thanks for sharing.

My English grandpa used to roll his own fags. :)

He always had a soggy, unlit stub hanging from his mouth.

Yeah, they tried to get it totally banned back in 2014.

http://vapenewsmagazine.com/agent-vape/reynolds-american-urges-e-cig-ban-fda-should-not-allow-such-products-to-be-sold-or-marketed

Didn’t work.

Now they want to try to take over the entire vaping industry.

http://www.bat.com/ecigarettes

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2016/jan/04/british-american-tobacco-e-cigarette-wins-uk-medicine-licence

They were a major driving force in the idiot new regulations.

The regulations declared anything that went towards vaping, hardware, e-liquids, etc was a “tobacco product.”

In order to not be subjet to a $300,000.00 per item review process they wanted to set a grandfather date of 7 YEARS ago.

That would of course drive 99% of the folks in the business right out.

Most of the above was negotiated out of the actual regs and folks are still working on the rest but we don’t know how it will actually all land.

I could never smoke cigs. However, the last cigar I enjoyed (a lot) was a Davidoff Nicaragua Diadema.
