It was the Boxing Day tsunami, which hit the morning of December 26, 2004,
after a 9.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, in Indonesia.

Yup - IIRC, billions of dollars in aid went their way. I scratched my head at the time. Most of these people would slit our throats, given half a chance. Very hard-core islamists.

Yes, and I thought the Acheh Islamists believed Allah was no longer on their side because of the tsunami. Their long-standing separatist movement gave up shortly after the disaster.
