Thomas Sowell: The Left's Phony Compassion For The Downtrodden
Investors Business Daily ^ | October 18, 2016 3:25 PM ET | THOMAS SOWELL

Claiming the role of champions of the masses is something the political left has been doing ever since there has been a political left — which is to say, ever since the late 18th century, when people with such views sat on the left side of the French National Assembly.

Like so much that is claimed by the left, their compassion for the masses has seldom been subjected to any factual test. Both their words and their deeds reveal their low opinion of the people they claim to be championing.

When Barack Obama referred to ordinary working people as people who are "bitter," and who "cling to guns or religion," that was not just a peculiarity of Obama. He was part of a centuries-long tradition on the left.

No one so epitomized the 18th century left as Jean Jacques Rousseau, who likened the masses to "a stupid, pusillanimous invalid." In the 19th century, Karl Marx said, "The working class is revolutionary or it is nothing" -- in other words, millions of human beings mattered only if they carried out his vision.

Fabian socialist George Bernard Shaw included the working class among the "detestable" people...

...more remarkable than these findings is that the left was able to get away with asserting the opposite for years, without evidence being asked for or given...

...People with a different vision of the world are not answered but characterized — as people needing to have their consciousness raised or as people who "just don't get it."

The near-monopoly of the left in academia allows such evasions to pass muster. But it cheats students out of practice in confronting opposing views on innumerable subjects, which they will have to do after they leave the insulated confines of academia.

A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money.

Thomas Sowell is a poster boy for what used to be called “The Self-Made Man” - that is, he made it on talent, initiative, intelligence, and hard work, rather than rely on government handouts and set-asides.

The Left therefore hates him, and always has done so. The Smithsonian wouldn’t even include him in its current exhibition on Black history.

Anything he has to say is worth a good, hard listen.

Every election the crooked politicians promise prosperity for all, yet strangely enough, it never happens. This is the ABSOLUTE first time we the people have a real say in what can happen; change can be made. VOTE TRUMP!

“The people” are there to lift their betters. There’s no reason for them to exist if not to do so. The ruling class (The entire :eft and far too many on the Right) may claim otherwise but this is what they believe.

It’s the ‘Industry’. Learned a long time ago that if government really solved problems instead of creating them, they would no longer be needed.
As in the welfare department is not interested in solving poverty because then they’d be out of clients, and out of work.

...among the many Communist countries that emerged around the world in the 20th century, there has not been a single one where the workers' standard of living has been as high as that of working people in the United States.

When blatant lies are accepted a priori the biggest threat becomes analytical discussion... Denying reality using group-think is the essence of 'polite society' - the mother of totalitarian rule. Once again, hats off to Sowell.

Thomas Sowell Free Trader ways do nothing for the working man either. Marx loved so called free Trade too. Globalist NWO types have no room to criticize the left. Birds of a feather.

It is pretty simple.
The Left takes your money to help the ‘downtrodden,’ keeps 95% of it, wastes the rest, and blames its enemies for being greedy and selfish for not giving more money.
Win, win, win, as far they are concerned.

“The near-monopoly of the left in academia allows such evasions to pass muster. But it cheats students out of practice in confronting opposing views on innumerable subjects, which they will have to do after they leave the insulated confines of academia.”

The leftist indoctrinated leaving academia will not be exposed to opposing views by the leftist controlled MSM. Their only exposure to right thinking will come from “standard rednecks” and “deplorables”, etc. which MUST be ignored.

Sowel is a national treasure. At least to those of us who “just don’t get it”.

Good God you yahoos think a tariff is some kind of death sentence. LOL. It is a hell of a better way to raise revenue than the income taxes that free traders tacitly endorse.
