Bank accounts of Russian state broadcaster Russia Today frozen in UK; All of RBS cut off to RT
RT ^ | 10/17/16

RT UK’s bank accounts have been blocked, RT’s editor-in-chief reported. The National Westminster Bank has informed RT UK that it will no longer have the broadcaster among its clients.

The bank provided no explanation for the decision.

“We have recently undertaken a review of your banking arrangements with us and reached the conclusion that we will no longer provide these facilities,” NatWest said in a letter to RT’s London office.

The bank said that the entire Royal Bank of Scotland Group, of which NatWest is part of, would refuse to service RT.

If this happens in Washington DC's RT local, then it looks war with Russia is a foregone conclusion.

No, I think this is democrat theater, trying to show everyone that Russia is behind wikileaks and they are trying to hurt democrats.

Laughable. But their desperation shows they are terrified of the American Brexit.

Something that won’t happen until December 2 is hard to call a freeze. If RT is unable to find any other bank in the UK to service the needs of employees living in Britain, that would be egregious, suggesting a government diktat. How pathetic we are if WWIII is triggered by nonsense.

I agree would be an ominous sign.

What a moronic thing to say. It’s the opposite actually. The Libs are already laying the groundwork in the media for another surrender monkey “reset” with Russia.

I think obama and kerry are too, cowardly to do that in the US having arranged for the UK to be their water carriers

Btw I read that RT is the 8th most watched news broadcast in UK

Now- will the Russians be allowed to access and move their money ?
There will be an act 2
Stand by

I am now watching via YouTube a RT broadcast of a Russian Orchestra performance to benefit Syria war victims in the Palmyra Syria amphitheater which they saved from IS destruction ... I hope they can repeat this performance in Aleppo someday soon

The initial reports are wrong. Account wasn’t frozen. Bank just said they don’t want to do business with RT any more and they have to take their money elsewhere by December.

“Now- will the Russians be allowed to access and move their money ?”

“Frozen” is the wrong word in this case. Frozen means money can’t be withdrawn or accessed by the person or entity it belongs to. Similar to frozen assets meaning assets can’t be touched. That’s not what RT linked article says.

NatWest is refusing banking services/facilities to RT (see NatWest’s letter published on RT website). It is a closure of RT accounts, not freezing the account.

I read somewhere yesterday they had allegedly given the excuse of sanctions against Russia for withdrawing their banking services.

Also, couple of days ago, Boris Johnson said people should demonstrate in front of Russian Embassy in London because of Russia’s involvement in Syria. This could well be a contributor to NatWest’s withdrawal of banking services to RT and closure of their account.

They are trying to put pressure on & stop RT (which is gov’t funded) from doing business in the UK.

well, what can I say... Qatar is a huge ‘customer’ and a regular ‘donor’... not to mention other close relations!

It has gotten weird now. The bank says they haven’t closed RT accounts and the letter that RT showed with the customer name blacked out was to another customer.

As far as I can ascertain, RT, is not solely financially ‘owned’ by the Russian gov’t. Typically, there can be multiple financial contributors and ‘owners’, hence bank account holders, such as third parties and non-profit organizations. Therefore, matters can be legally complicated.

The same is true for Al Jazeera, for example, though known to be ‘owned’ by Qatar gov’t.

I actually saw the first letter from NatWest, was dated October 12, 2016, published on RT website at the time. The content of the said letter has not changed since. But it is not unusual to black out “to” and “signature” details in such letters, particularly during litigation.

Am sure it is being reviewed legally by both sides. Ultimately, it is between NatWest and RT to work things out.

By the statements made it is clear that one of them is lying. By the track record of Russia Today I have a strong suspicion that it is them.

Maybe.

It’d be quite a salacious lie.

I guess we’ll just have to wait a bit and see what it is. Usually the argument “the lie is so stupid and would come out right away” would be good, but I don’t think it applies to Russians any more. I have been following the MH17 story and they have published ridiculous lies non-stop. Even lies that directly contradict their other lies. I don’t think they care at all about being caught lying.

What happened to MH17?
Did pro-Russian ‘rebels’ shoot it down?

Yes. With a Buk missile the investigators tracked to a specific Russian base.
