When Gov. Jerry Brown and his allies urged voters to adopt a temporary income tax on the wealthiest Californians and a statewide sales tax on everyone four years ago, the deal was billed as a short-term salve for a state mired in debt and on the verge of insolvency.
The taxes were needed to stave off $6 billion in so-called trigger cuts to schools and social programs baked into the state budget by Democrats as a threat to voters. Lawmakers also threatened to cut three weeks off the school year if Proposition 30 didnt pass. [ ]
Now, with the sales tax set to expire at the end of this year, and income taxes on earnings above $250,000 a year set to end in January 2019, the California Teachers Association and other labor unions want to keep the income tax, which they say is again needed to prevent $4 billion in cuts to schools.
Proposition 55, they say, does not raise taxes on anyone; it simply maintains the current income tax rates. The measure would extend the income tax for another 12 years, raising from $4 billion to $9 billion a year, according to the independent state Legislative Analysts Office. The sales tax would expire as planned in January.

Anyone who believes a “temporary” tax will ever go away is only fooling themselves.
Politicians look at us a sources of funding, providing them money to spend is our basic function in life and anything we do in the meantime to survive is apparently incidental to that or voting for them.
it’s a 10% state income tax
10% !!!!!!
Same logic as a murderer of his parents asking for mercy as he is an orphan!
Law was passed as temporary, 'emergency measure', so to say it does not raise taxes is to abuse the language and logic. Being that this is California and it is the Teachers Union advocating it, I'd say that they are probably incapable of English and/or Logic!
Anyone who believes a temporary tax will ever go away is only fooling themselves.
You mean like the “Victory Tax” from 1942, which today we call Mandatory With Holding.
The taxes were needed to stave off $6 billion in so-called trigger cuts to schools and social programs
For the SOLE PURPOSE of supporting and educating 10 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS IN THIS GODFORSAKEN STATE.
FU Moonbeam.
They are, however, capable of avarice and lust for power.
To paraphrase Leia from Star Wars, the more they tighten their grip on the upper tax brackets, the more revenue will slip through their fingers as those rich people continue to abandon the state.
Two things.
First is that supposed to impress me as somehow reasonable? Is it to invalidate my assertion that these leeches look at us as a pile of loot to fritter away?
Second, no it isn’t a “10%” tax. The “temporary” tax hike was between 1 and 3% depending on the bracket (I won’t go on here about my attitude towards all “progressive” taxation). But this actually represented about a 30% increase in the rate of taxation at the high end from just over 9% to just over 12%.
So not “10%” on any account.
Should have cut social programs.
Removing all illegal aliens from eligibility for any State benefit would sure have been a great start, as you indicate. We should not even be educating them. They have a government of their own elsewhere for that.
When first passed, the taxes on income were applied retroactively to the first of that year.
All these libs fleeing the mess they’ve made in California are already screwing up other States.
Exactly.
Daylight savings time, withholding, even rent controls ... we will never really stop fighting WW2.
In fact, I poked fun at this in my Transformers: Genesis novel (look at my links) where rent controls were still in force in Iacon, the nominal capital of Cybertron, many many MANY thousands of our years after the war that saw them being instituted ... by Quintessons no less.
Alicir jans - mostly stupid steeple for the politicianthieves to sheer
How’s the vote going to go on this?
There has never been a tax in the history of the state of California that has gone away. Ever.
***Anyone who believes a temporary tax will ever go away is only fooling themselves.***
It is like toll roads that that the state says will pay for themselves in a few years, then become free roads. The problem is some of those toll roads have been paid for since the 1960s and they are STILL toll roads.
“And the money keeps rolling in, from all directions...”-EVITA
If I’m a wealthy Californian, I move.
I no longer live in CA. With the oppressively high taxes and high cost of living, not an incentive for any one to settle there.
And the onerous state bureaucracy isn’t fun to deal with.
Liberalism has no real answer for a state perpetually mired in the red.
The government could take every dollar and give it to the teachers and they would still beg for more.
Government = waste!!!
unreasonable is the tax
Wow. I was thinking the exact same thing.
To wit, to to any school in LA County and you will find that 50% or more of the students are illegal aliens. And that’s a fact, not an opinion.
