The following is how I recollect hearing Schieffer’s story.
In 1963 Schieffer was some level of assignment reporter in Texas. Following Oswald being named a suspect, his mother inquired at a local precinct house about her son’s status. Schieffer happened to be nearby and after a few words most ricky-tick was “gallantly” driving her to Dallas. The long drive gave Schieffer exclusive access for what became a career changing story. For near on 50 years he flogged the good horse nearly to death.
Basically, the same thing can be said of Dan Rather who was passing through Dallas from another assignment and picked up some slack in CBS staffing.
