Why Republicans can't easily dump Trump off the ballot
CNN ^ | Oct 8, 2016 | Tom LoBianco

The GOP is stuck with Donald Trump -- but that isn't stopping weary Republicans from looking at every way possible to remove him from the top of the ticket.

News of Trump's sexually aggressive remarks from 2005 is just the latest explosion to spur discussion of ways to break ties with the presidential nominee.

The #NeverTrump forces fought all the way through the last day of the Republican Convention. That was quickly followed by his lengthy battle with Gold Star parents Khizr and Ghazala Khan, which had some Republicans digging through the party's rules and state laws for options.

Talk of replacing Trump ebbed when he pulled even with Hillary Clinton in the polls last month, and with just 30 days left until the election, thousands of ballots already cast in states with early voting and the legal deadlines for changing names on the ballot already past, the GOP is stuck with him.

Trump says he's not going anywhere, but that won't stop the conversation...

A spokesman for Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, who has been an ardent anti-Trump Republican, said he is "likely" to write in Pence when he votes next month. New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, facing a tough re-election battle, issued a statement saying she supports Pence. And others are certain to follow.

Writing in Pence or somebody else is the same as staying home.

I cannot understand these half-witted people who are still trying to get Trump tossed. The time for that has passed. If you don't support Trump you may as well vote for Killary.

These are not real Republicans. They are part of a uniparty that branches out into the Democrats and Republicans and tries to torpedo anyone who gets in the way of their agenda. Just keep your wits about you and vote Trump...that’s all you can do.

One thing is for sure. My opinion of both the Democrat and Republican Party has been changed forever by this election...especially the Republican Party...what a group of effete scum.

Proud to throw their votes away and destroy our country. Defeat them all!

I think the race is over (Trump landslide incoming) and now they’re trying to pack the house and Senate with dems and “their people”. By pulling this bs denouncing of Trump, many will vote Trump and ignore down ticket, thus giving Trump much legislative opposition.

What if this whole thing is to set a narrative for after Trump wins? Thoughts??

I am voting Trump!

The weak-kneed Republicans who are backing away are using this as an excuse to keep the Cheap Labor Express running, they never supported Trump to begin with.

I dont know how reliable that Mike guy on twitter is but he is reporting that the GOP is telling EVERYONE in Congress/Senate to turn their backs on Trump, to say NOTHING positive about him, and to refuse entry to any of Trump supporters into their offices..if that is true..the Republican Party is dead..they want Democrats in power forever that is their plan

I would think writing in Pence would in essence be the same as a vote for Trump if it came down to a few ballots being in dispute.

Oh, we in this house intend to send a message the Republican machine will hear loud and clear when we vote in November. They are too insulated in Kennebunkport and at the Romney Tabernacle, but people father down the food chain? Toast. Yeah, it is unfair, but so are a lot of things.

The GOP-Whig comparison will be complete in 2016.

The biggest reason why they can't drop Trump from the ticket is that no Republican in his right mind would ever want to take his place.

The only option would be to dig up some corpse like Bob Dole who doesn't have a future in politics and is too old even to do Viagra ads.

I’d rather have someone like Trump with his attitude than someone like Graham’s mealy mouth wishy-washy way of talking. So big deal what he said 11 years ago; these morons want someone in white riding a white horse like the Lone Ranger with a pristine background from the time he entered the world. There was only one person like that ....

I think this was all a set-up by the Bush Crime Family working with the GOPe as retribution for Trump denying Jeb’s ascension to the throne.

They are real Republicans. It's Trump who isn't a real Republican. That's why he had so many Republicans bad-mouthing him even before this story hit the news.

There is no Republican in this election. It's a race between a Democrat (Clinton) and an independent (Trump) who co-opted the Republican nomination process to get on the ticket.

Writing in Pence is a vote for the GOP ticket. Your vote is for a party elector who will vote for the party ticket.

Dump Trump and you hand the election to Clinton. Which may be what they wanted all along.

You’re going to pay for your sniveling cowardice and slithering treachery, GOP.

I’m going to bring you pain in November.

It’s time for you to go.
