Where I live I never see the sun go down - it just disappears behind a mountain. The sunrises are fantastic though.

Depends on which side of the room the chair was. Was it on the east wall or west wall?

The windows in that room are north exposures. So the sun would have traveled from right to left, casting light on the left side of the room first and later in the day on the right side.
