And why in the world would his ex-wife have copies of his tax returns.

Considering that Trump files as head of the Trump Organization, with all the benefits of real estates write-offs, he wouldn't file a joint return and he surely wouldn't supply his wife (and her lawyer) with a copy so she could see how much he made or lost.

The liberals are saying his ex-wife did it because he treated her so horribly.

Do not believe that for a moment. He is on good terms with both ex-wives.

We all know that the Media and the clinton campaign are full of BS!

What if he leaked it but changed the numbers?

Trump's former accountant validated the numbers, explaining why the net operating loss looked strange (numbers misaligned, and in a different font).

The software wouldn't print such a large number. He had to insert the leading numbers with a typewriter.

That potentially puts them afoul of both state and federal law.

The press is not at risk for revealing a tax return given them in their mail box.

1st amendment.

They are joint returns. The NJ return has Marla's signature on them.

Her signature is on the tax return. It’s not impossible that she would have a copy or be able to get her hands on one.

Yes, they are. That's considered private information, even for a public figure.

There are specific provisions in federal law and NY state law.

The 1st amendment isn't a defense against breaking the law.

It’s simple, if he files charges for the unauthorized release, he didn’t leak it; if he does not file charges, it’s because he did.

If it’s going to come out, best if done on his own terms. Control the narrative before you’re victimized by it.

You are correct. I just went through the return and it is indeed a joint return.

As a former corporate tax CPA early in my career, I can't imagine why he would have filed jointly.

That said, I still can't imagine she would be the source.

He actually treated her nicely in their divorce.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Trump campaign leaked it. Look how quickly and well prepared Giuliani and Christie were able to defend it shortly afterward.

I think Guiliani looks and sounds like his best days are far behind him. He is a liability.

I doubt Trump leaked it. Too much ignorance out there per corporate structures and tax code. Can only hurt though it is actually entirely innocent.

If leaked by an accountant, Trump should sue them for breach of privacy.

Likely leaked by someone in the state/fed tax office (IRS if fed). There may be circumstances under audit where state tax forms are requested by IRS.

Should be easy to see if leaked by tax entity. There will be a computer audit trail of who accessed the records.

Trump needs to get that info subpoenaed and pounce!

I watched yesterday as lawyers on Fox explained why the press (specifically the NY Times in this case) is not liable for such. I cannot remember their names but they were convincing.

I will look for some video footage as support.

“”Net operating losses. Owning a business is full of surprises. Some years your expenses exceed your gross income, translating into a loss for the year. You may be able to deduct this loss against any other income you have, or carry it back to offset prior years’ taxable income or carry it over to offset income in future years.””

I will admit that I’ve laid off watching so much news as it makes my blood boil but I’ve yet to see anyone explain this to the knuckleheads who do the interviews - at least on cable TV. I had to turn Bret Baier off tonight as he was so absolutely stupid interviewing that numbskull Clinton spokesperson Fallon. He let him get away with old, old talking points and never once corrected him on anything.

Of course, Fallon never draws a breath when expounding on the virtues of Hillary Clinton but Baier should have cut him off.

Was it on FR this morning that a tax accountant’s article was printed about NOL’s? It was an excellent article but since then I’ve read dozens of others on other issues so it’s difficult to separate them. Baier should do himself AND US a favor by informing himself of the tax laws or finding a different line of work. There is positively no reason for him to be on FOX if he can’t use his time to INFORM the public honestly. I would guess there’s still a sizeable percentage of voters who do believe that the NOL’s are a ripoff and illegal..

I can’t fault Rudy for anything (except that his glasses look at times like they were sat upon). I think he was the greatest mayor in US history. Trump is fortunate to have him. Why do you think otherwise? Am I missing something?

“”The leaks must have been made by NY, NJ, and CT.””

OR, since you’re a tax specialist, is it possible that a copy of the NY, NJ and CT state returns (1st pages which were leaked) were attached to the Federal Return? That’s how it’s been done for years but I don’t know how long this has been required. If they WERE attached to the federal return, who got their hands on them from there?

Curiousier and curiousier!

Go to the 2:30+ mark of this video (this link should open to about that point...LINK). The Judge explains why the Times is not liable.
