In Ashland, Virginia, Pence says he's looking forward to contrasting record with Kaine

Standing between two 18-wheelers in the parking lot of a trucking company near Ashland, Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence said he’s looking forward to heading a little further south Tuesday morning for a “little bit of a debate” with Democratic counterpart Tim Kaine.

"Hillary Clinton's record on foreign affairs alone could take up the whole 90 minutes. And it wouldn’t be a pretty picture,” Pence said Monday to a crowd of hundreds at a rally held at the Cox Transportation Services facility in Hanover County.

While the Indiana governor said he expects much of the vice presidential debate, which will be held on the campus of Longwood University in Farmville, to focus on “the visions and the choice” at the top of the ticket, he’s also hoping to contrast his record with Kaine’s time as governor of Virginia.

"When Tim Kaine was governor, he couldn’t get a roads bill passed,” Pence said. “In Indiana, we're the crossroads of America. I actually signed into law $2.5 billion in roads and bridges and infrastructure for Indiana.”

A small town that has wrestled with big issues

FARMVILLE, Va. — When Joan Johns Cobbs was 13, her older sister, Barbara, took an incredible risk. Fed up with shabby conditions at their all-black high school, Barbara Johns led the students on a walkout to demand better education.

It was 1951, and the resulting court case became one of the pillars of Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court decision that ended school segregation nationwide. Farmville and Prince Edward County responded harshly, shutting down the public school system for five years, from 1959 to 1964, rather than letting whites and blacks attend together.

A Campus Rich In History

Longwood is one of the hundred oldest colleges in the U.S. and the third-oldest public university in Virginia. The campus’s rich history is accentuated by two of the most significant events in American history. Along the northern border of campus, the Civil War effectively drew to a close as Confederate troops retreated and Gen. Robert E. Lee met with his top lieutenants a final time. Remarkably, nearly 100 years later at the southern end of campus, the historic student-led strike of segregated Moton High School over school conditions helped launch the modern Civil Rights Movement.

“Who is ... moderating?”

Looks like it’s someone named Elaine Quijano of CBSN and CBS.

Note how the VP Debate is being held in Virginia, Kaine’s home state. And who on the Pub side negotiated where the VP Debate would take place. The Keystone Cops? Yeah, but this time, who would be chosen as Debate moderators for the 2016 general election and where the Debates would be held was supposed to be different. Pubs weren’t going to let the Dems get away with stacking the deck against us again. Well, we can all see how well that turned out.

Yes, it’s still unclear to me how that was decided.
