ISLAMIC State will collapse within six months, prompting British jihadists to return to the UK bent on revenge, terrorism experts have warned.
Displaced fighters are likely to retaliate by launching a wave of attacks here, according to counter extremism think tank the Quilliam Foundation.
Managing director Adam Deen believes ISIS will be defeated by April next year after being pummelled by British, US and Russian air strikes and driven out of Iraq and Syria by coalition forces.
The murderous group has lost nearly half its territory and introduced crippling taxes in the absence of any oil wealth, a move that is rapidly turning its supporters against it.
Mr Deen said militants have already started to switch to other terrorist groups, most notably Al Qaeda, as ISIS becomes little more than a propaganda machine.
However, he warned that battle hardened British fighters will instead seek to bring the war to Britain.
The FBI last week said Western countries face an unprecedented threat from terrorists being driven out of Iraq and Syria.
Director James Comey told a US Congress hearing: There will be a terrorist diaspora sometime in the next two to five years like weve never seen before.
Not all of the Islamic State killers are going to die on the battlefield.
Mr Deen said: ISIS has been such a draw because it has the gravitas of having the caliphate, an area under its direct control where it implements laws and a way of life.
However, its territory is shrinking.
"IS now governs almost half of what it had in 2014 and it will continue to lose ground in the face of heavy air strikes and militia ground forces.
The organisation probably only has another six months left before it becomes nothing more than a name, a propaganda machine.
"We have had reports of fighters leaving IS to join other extremist organisations in the region.
Al Qaeda have maintained a strong presence so they are likely to benefit the most.
What we need to be careful of, however, and this is something the security services are acutely aware of, is British IS fighters returning home.
They have had their caliphate, this utopia for Islamists, snatched away and Britain has played a crucial part, so revenge will be uppermost in their minds.
I think the aim of IS has changed. Without a state they will become purely a terrorist organisation and use propaganda to advocate the killing of as many unbelievers as possible.
That will encourage their supporters to attack the UK, France, Belgium, Germany and the US from within.
Islamic State swept across a third of Iraq and large swathes of Syria in the summer of 2014, seizing vast amounts of money and weapons as well as taking control of oil fields.
Despite a series of major defeats in recent months, the group still controls Mosul, Iraqs second largest city.
However, Mr Deen believes the killing of British masked executioner Mohammed Emwazi, who was known as Jihadi John, was the beginning of the end.
It set the ball rolling for sure, he said.
His death was an eyeopener for the group in that it showed the high level of intelligence the West was able to pick up.
"To kill someone who was, aside from leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the organisations main figurehead, was a real blow to them.
With the caliphate now on the brink of collapse, those Britons who slip through the net and are caught back here should be questioned and tried for any crimes they have committed.
All should be extensively monitored as well as being put on rehabilitation programmes to de-radicalise them.
The stories of their disillusionment will be crucial to stop future recruits.
There will be a terrorist diaspora sometime in the next two to five years like weve never seen before...
Then deport them now. Why wait?
Imagine if we hadn’t deported nickcarraway’s descendants a hundred years ago. That was a close one.
I’m confused. If Syrian, Russian, US and British forces defeat ISIS in Syria, do the defeated fighters have to go home to mommy or can they just go down the block and join up with one of the US and British supported jihadi groups?
Just kill them. Best de-radicalization program there is.
Rehab programs?!?! Just kill them!
Islam is a war plan.
Impending “Zero Hour” coordinated attack BUMP.
Brit officials, look in the mirror. You let the troglodytes into your country and now you start worrying? How idiotic and stupid. Remember, there is no one going to pull your butts out of the fire this time around.
The underlying issue is that they’ve sown seeds all over the world and the existence of a core group in Syria and Iraq no longer matters. There’s no doubt in my mind that thousands of wannabe jihadis in the US, many of whom have never been to Iraq or Syria, have pledged their allegiance to al Baghdadi and ISIS. But fear not, the FBI will protect us...
My prediction, Obama rather than vet the terrorists, will try to put up a wall so he can keep them from being vetted at all.
Blind deniability is the game he plays.
Wishful thinking that the ISIS state will collapse from a short bombing campaign especially with Obama’s feckless leadership. Look at history. Fire bombing Japanese and German cities didn’t end WW-II. It took two atomic bombs and the threat of more to force a Japanese surrender and an invasion of the German heartland to end the war in Europe. ISIS must be utterly crushed militarily and Islam itself to be purged of jihadism to make the world safe. Islam is the problem and if there is not a reformation of this religion it must be destroyed.
