Opinion: How Donald Trump hijacked the Democrats’ best issue
Market Watch ^ | September 30, 2016 | Rex Nutting

Trump’s populist campaign is fueled by working-class anger about unfair trade, an issue the Democrats need to reclaim

The Democratic Party could have blocked the rise of Donald Trump years ago if it had just listened.

The story of Trump’s amazingly successful movement is also the story of how Democrats turned their backs on their working-class roots and sided with the elites on the crucial economic question of our times: Who would win from globalization, and who would lose?

The facts are stark. Since 1994, when the North American Free Trade Agreement went into effect and the U.S. began the process of lowering tariffs on Chinese imports, the U.S. trade deficit has ballooned from about $100 billion to about $500 billion a year. Since then, U.S. manufacturing jobs have fallen by about 5 million, and inequality has worsened, with the richest Americans capturing almost all of the income growth....

Never.

Left vs Right is meaningless today. The terms are outdated.
Liberal vs Conservative is meaningless today. The terms are outdated.
Democrat vs Republican is meaningless today. The terms are outdated.

It’s Patriot vs Globalist.
or
Judeo-Christian values vs Evil

There are no other struggles.

If Democrats were more interested in doing what is best for the country rather than what is best for their political careers, this would not be a “hijacked” issue.

Actually, the same could be said for Republicans.

I hate politics that is nothing more than maneuvering for more power for the politicians. Democrats are the most egregious in that regard, but Republicans (RINOs) do that, too.

Wouldn’t it be awesome if, instead of arguing over issues because of their political value, politicians would instead argue over what are the best solutions to the identified problems?

Definitely looks that way. The open-borders, gay rights/transgender pushing, abortionist, globalist uniparty is flushing America down the toilet.

To a great extent, I agree with you. I would add to your list of struggles ‘self-proclaimed elites vs the rest of us.’

Politically, Democrats decided to abandon appealing to certain groups.

Democrats decided to go all in with those pushing certain agendas. So, you see Democrats claiming to be the political champions of various minority groups, “LGBT” sexual identity peoples, environmental nuts, abortion rights activists and their “feminist” allies...........

Democrats decided to go all in, with the idea that various groups of people are discriminated against, and need big government solutions to the problems these people allegedly have.

And Democrats are all in, on the idea that any problem, everything from alleged racial discrimination to environmental problems, demands a solution from the federal government in Washington, DC. The Democrats have earned the stereotypical identity as the party of big government.

Democrats decided, that they would win elections more often than not, in promising to use the enormous power of big government, to help impose their vision of how the world should be on the rest of us.

Everything from trans-gender bathroom issues, to global warming issues, are viewed through the prism, by liberals, of them wanting to impose their views on us. And by extension, their need to use the power of the federal government to impose their visions on us.

Lincoln was a Whig and Reagan was a Democrat prior to their presidencies.

Move the capitol to offices in South Chicago. That will get the elite to rethink their jobs.

Exactly. Trump is running a presidential campaign of a Democratic candidate of the 1960’s such as JFK or Hubert Humphrey. A strong emphasis on national defense, but especially focusing on issues affecting working class Americans. The Democrats of today would condemn JFK and Hubert Humphrey as warmongers.

"It’s Patriot vs. Globalist or Judeo-Christian values vs. Evil."

You can make an argument that the classic conservative planks of small government and fiscal responsibility are no longer a part of the political landscape.
