Honestly as much as I hate Obama if he had championed this cause I would have voted for him. My non-US Citizen wife and I have to keep our finances completely separate because of US Tax laws.
Same here. Most US citizens overseas end up not even having to pay taxes because of the deduction. It is the paperwork and regulation. The IRS doesn't keep citizens informed of the new tax laws and if you miss filing a new form that you are not aware of, you are hit with a $10,000 fine and possible 10 year jail term. For example. FBAR filings have always been due by June 30. Last year they slipped a provision in another law that changed the filing date next year from June 30 to April 15. The IRS doesn't inform US citizens of that. So, next year many will - in good faith thinking they are following the law they have always filed- will file around June 30. They will then find out when they get a letter from the IRS that they owe them $10,000 or a possible jail sentence because they didn't file on time.
