The prime minister's top adviser is comparing questions about Maryam Monsef's family history to the racially charged "birther" movement in the United States.

Gerald Butts, principal secretary to Justin Trudeau, used social media to make the link between criticism of the Liberal cabinet minister and a campaign that falsely claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama was not born in America.

Butts specifically called out the Globe and Mail on Wednesday evening after it published an editorial about Monsef online. The editorial appeared in Thursday's newspaper.

Maryam Monsef confirms she was born in Iran, not Afghanistan Gerald Butts, principal secretary to Justin Trudeau, used social media to make the link between criticism of the Liberal cabinet minister and a campaign that falsely claimed that U.S. President Barack Obama was not born in America.

"Canada's full of people whose parents & grandparents were a little loose about their birthplace. My gramma was at times Polish, Ukrainian … Czech or Russian. My dad's family was the artfully termed *Scotch-Irish*. Funny how nobody asked them questions. Wonder why?" Butts tweeted Wednesday night.

Butts continued to engage on the topic on Twitter on Thursday.

Last week, Monsef acknowledged that she was born in Iran, not Afghanistan, as she had long claimed.

KEYWORDS:
Gerald Butts is the typical Prime Ministerial Adviser of the new PM Selfie. A man who's obviously delusional and at the same time illogical.

Ms. Monsef has acknowledged that she in fact WAS born in Iran not Afghanistan (as was her previous narrative right up until reporters starting questioning her story). The fact is, lying on your application for citizenship can have a severe consequences, extradition back to your country of origin being one of them.

Ms. Monsef is presently in charge of electoral reform in our country. If she was in fact aware of the lies her mother told when applying for her citizenship, that is a very serious matter. Regardless, her resignation should be forthcoming, but PM Selfie is as stubborn as he is Socialist so he's fighting back through his top adviser who is using the oddest argument ever.

Calling people who say Ms. Monsef should resign 'birthers'... Unlike the true 'birther' movement, there is no question as to where Ms. Monsef was born, so to use such an analogy is perplexing at best.

It does not matter if he was born in Hawaii if his father was a foreign national.
Children of foreign nationals inherit the nationality of their foreign national parent(s).
Natural born citizen means born here of citizen parents.
No other possible citizenship(s).
Only when one cannot be anything else can one be a natural born citizen.

No foreign birth.
No foreign parent(s)
No foreign citizenship(s)
No foreign influence on the Presidency is what John Jay stated in a letter to George Washington as the reason for insisting on a natural born citizen.

I fear we have lost that argument even on FreeRepublic Lurkin, but thanks for keeping it in the forefront of the issues. Common Sense is long dead with little prospect of a resurrection, certainly to in my lifetime. NBC is really a simple issue until lawyers get involved.

I first went in the Military in 1954 and I never new anyone that did not accept the fact that if they had children overseas those children could never become president.

I realize that the effort to confuse people about the clear meaning of a simple three word phrase has been largely successful, but I’m not giving up.

It is disheartening that so many FReepers are willing to abandon this important protection because their favorite politician is not eligible.
