Damn, thats a helluva commute, depending on where one is coming from Not really for those working in NYC, Manhattan in particular. Express busses, Metro-North, LIRR, ferries, often to link up to subway or surface transit (city busses) and extended walks are the way people get to and from work in NYC. Even once in the subway system, transfering between lines to reach different areas within one county or different counties is part and parcel of life in Fun City.

Prior to the opening of the Hudson Tubes (now PATH) in 1908, there were no tunnels under the Hudson River and all rail lines terminated in New Jersey until 1910 with the opening of Pennsylvania Station.
Ferries were the only transportation into Manhattan from the west for 400 years.
