Intelligence officer, allegedly speaking with PA chiefs ousted rival Dahlan, laments state of Palestinian leadership, says Abbas has nothing to offer
A top Egyptian intelligence official is heard mocking Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in a newly leaked phone call with a chief rival of the PA leader, characterizing him as old and stupid and saying the Fatah party is screwed under his leadership.
According to the Middle East Eye, the comments were made by Major General Wael el-Safty, an officer in Egypts General Intelligence Directorate in charge of Palestinian affairs, during a conversation with Fatahs Mohammad Dahlan.
In excerpts of the call which were broadcast on Egyptian Mekameleen TV, Safty reportedly says Abbass concentration isnt at full capacity and he has nothing to offer.
Safty goes on to compare Abbas to a camel, saying he routinely regurgitates old ideas. He also speaks of his advanced age (the PA leader is 81), saying The track is running out, if you excuse the phrase.
He claims Abbas isnt smart at all. He doesnt want to change, he doesnt want to do anything.
The Egyptian official attacks Abbass leadership, saying Palestinian factions inside Fatah and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) are becoming increasingly unruly under his leadership.
Fatah is completely screwed, he says. The (PLO) is even worse Its stupidity.
Only Saftys side of the conversation is heard in the leaks.
Though Middle East Eye notes that the broadcaster, Mekameleen, is not neutral and has in the past clearly supported the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, it says previous tapes leaked by the network have been authenticated by British experts in forensic speech science.
Dahlan, a former strongman in the Gaza Strip before Hamass violent takeover in 2007, was once regarded as one of Fatahs most prominent figures. Long at odds with Abbas, he was expelled from Fatah in 2011 following allegations of corruption and murder and now lives in the United Arab Emirates.
Sometimes touted as a possible successor to Abbas, Dahlan has routinely criticized the leaders policies and has funded projects in the West Bank and Gaza in a bid to strengthen his own status, moves seen by Abbass supporters as a continuing effort to one-up the PA president.
In recent months Abbas and Dahlan have been attempting to mend their ties ahead of local elections in the West Bank and Gaza, in a bid to encourage unity in Fatah and prevent a victory for Hamas.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was a Soviet spy in Damascus in the 1980s, Israels Channel 1 television reported Wednesday, citing information it said was included in an archive smuggled out of the USSR.
According to Channel 1s foreign news editor Oren Nahari, the famed Mitrokhin archive, kept by KGB defector Vasily Mitrokhin, revealed that Abbas was a Soviet mole in Damascus in 1983.
The documents obtained by Israeli researchers Isabella Ginor and Gideon Remez purportedly show that Abbas, code-named Krotov (mole), was involved with the Soviets while Mikhail Bogdanov, today Vladimir Putins envoy to the Middle East. was stationed in Damascus.
Bogdanov was caught in a diplomatic tussle earlier this week after trying to broker a summit between Abbas and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Moscow, who both claimed a willingness to meet while decrying the other for allegedly refusing. ..."

Don’t they answer the phone by saying, in a loud voice; “THIS IS NOT A SECURE LINE’?
“Never write if you can speak; never speak if you can nod; never nod if you can wink.” .
Very interesting.
