The trees at Toomer's Corner after a game earlier in the season.
Butch Dill/AP
The toilet paper hanging from one of Auburn University's famed Toomer's Corner oak trees was set on fire late Saturday night and surveillance footage of the corner appears to show a person intentionally setting the fire.
The toilet paper celebration is a longstanding tradition at Auburn following wins by their football team.
Following Auburn's 18-13 upset win over No. 18 LSU, the toilet paper caught fire causing damage to the tree.

Jackass.
Hope it wasn’t an LSU fan, but it certainly might have been.
I thought they were already dying from being poisoned a few years back.
"Under a cloudless blue sky, joyous fans celebrated the rebirth of a landmark that a few years ago was tarnished by Alabama fan Harvey Updyke, who poisoned the 80-year-old trees during the Tigers' 2010 national championship season."
That is a weird, sorry, IMHO low-class tradition. TP a tree to celebrate winning a game? Isn’t that insulting to the tree?
They were taken out and replaced with trees from here in South Carolina.
They did. They could not be saved.
These are NEW trees that had been grown by their agriculture department or something from acorns years gone by from the original oak trees.
Two replaced. One didn’t make it. Then another new one in its place.
This is the first year rolling has been allowed since at least before 2012.
Not sure what year they were poisoned.
Whole corner has been re-done and new brick walkways and wrought iron above brick walled areas. Really pretty.
What is wrong with people? Hail State.
Not sure of the exact origin but it has to do with their greatest rivalry being the “Roll Tide” team. Sometimes represented with a roll of TP and box of Tide detergent.
Kids have fun. No trees are usually harmed in the process. Until Harvey Updike poisoned the trees the year Cam Newton took Auburn to the National Championship and WON.
I am a State Bulldog fan and I think it was a wonderful tradition which generations enjoyed. Hail State and War Eagle.
I sure hope no one from Venezuela sees that massive waste of TP! ;)
You are correct. I got the acorn part of the replacement story mixed up with this:
Another present for fans will be the vast renovation Samford Park plaza will undergo in the next year. The planting of the new oaks was just the beginning, as Clardy said the second part of the school’s project will be to add 30 15-foot-tall trees, which were grown from acorns from the original oaks at Toomer’s Corner, along a new brick walkway that will connect Samford Hall to Toomer’s Corner. Clardy said the renovations will begin after Auburn’s spring game April 18, and the new trees will start being planted in February 2016.
“That’s going to completely transform the corner,” Clardy said.
An example of the wasteful excesses of capitalist surpluses, eh?

Is Mr. Updike still having to tell new arrivals to the Alabama state prison that the time he’s doing is for poisoning Auburn’s magnificent live oaks, and that he got caught after calling a radio talk show to brag about it?
More toilet paper on those trees than in Venezuela!
Beat me to it!
We were down there as a guest family for Texas A&M’s first game against Auburn. They’ve done a good job on the corner with the new walkways.
What school was the jerk from that poisoned them?
After this fire, how are the new ones getting alone?
LOL! Beau played football in AL in High School, so we’ve got the Roll Tide t-shirts and all of that.
My Packers are on in 30 minutes! Time for a Bloody Mary. :)
He was a die-hard Alabama fan.
Not sure how the one oak is doing this a.m. I’ll have to ask my kids when I talk to them today. Both my kids are @ Auburn along with lots of my money. haha
Daughter Chem E major, should graduate in May.
Son, Aerospace, a sophomore, graduation date unknown depending IF he co-op’s.
I love that little town. Love many small college towns vs. big city locations.
