Battle rages near Aleppo, air onslaught continues

Syrian government and rebel forces battled for control of high ground on the Aleppo outskirts on Saturday as warplanes bombed the city's opposition-held east relentlessly in a Russian-backed offensive that has left Washington's Syria policy in tatters.

In their first major ground advance of the offensive, the army and its militia allies seized control of the Handarat Palestinian refugee camp, a few kilometres north of Aleppo, only for rebels to counterattack a few hours later.

"The fighters are waging ferocious battles because it is a battle of existence," a senior rebel official told Reuters.

Rebels said they had recovered some or all of Handarat. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the battle was ongoing. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian military.

The assault on Aleppo, where more than 250,000 civilians are trapped in a besieged opposition sector, could be the biggest battle yet in a civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and driven 11 million from their homes.

Residents say air strikes on eastern Aleppo since the offensive was announced on Thursday have been more intense than ever, using more powerful bombs. Scores of people have been killed in the last two days.

Two weeks after Moscow and Washington announced a ceasefire, President Bashar al-Assad and his Russian and Iranian allies appear to have launched a campaign for a decisive battlefield victory that has buried any hope for diplomacy.

The fools in Washington keep insisting there is no military solution.

Yes, we should not be in Syria.

But there IS a military solution for Assad.

If you’re suggesting getting rid of him because he’s a rotten, no-good, murdering SOB, you might want to rethink that because his opposition is even worse.

Based on the attack on Syrian troops last week, I’d say we’re on ISIS side. They almost wiped out that entire base and town because of our bombing raid.

I'm suggesting only that Assad has decided to implement a military solution to the civil war there.

And, once the country is unified Syrians can return to their homeland.

“No one seems to know which side we are on anyway.”

That’s easy!

The DC crowd is on the side of IS/ISIS/ISIL and the moderate beheaders (aka SDF). Russia is on Syria’s side.

Who ever came up with the expression “The devil you know is better than the devil you don’t know” must have been talking about the middle east.

Let’s replace and have a mob lynch a Middle Eastern tyrant who is battling Muslim Jihadists! That always works! And this time, maybe we can start a war with Russia in the process.

The US armed just a few “democratic rebels”, what could go wrong?

The hissing cobra Barack Hussein Obama has made it obvious that he is with ISIL/ISIS. He has barely spoken about the many outrages committed by Isis both in Syria and Iraq and he has ALLOWED ISIS to casually cross into Iraq without any resistance for many months. Obama could have decimated them with bombing by planes or drones as Isis drove hundreds of miles over open dessert totally exposed to air attacks.

FUBO for inviting those Russian and Iranian barbarians to invade the Middle East to crush democracy, and justify the murder of a half a million Syrians!

Syria conflict map. It is updated constantly.

http://syria.liveuamap.com/

The colors are the following
Lighter Green: SDF - Syria Defense Forces (aka Syrian rebels, aka the ‘moderate’ beheaders’ which is composed of many groups of various names) The USA provides arms and training by US military and intel advisors.

Darker Green - Turkish Army (with air cover provided by the USA) which is on the northern Syria/Turkey border.

Red - Syria Arab Army (Syrian government)

Yellow - YPG (the Kurds) They are basically on their own. No one wants them or likes them.

Black - IS/ISIS/ISIL/Al Qaeda in Iraq and Syria (which the USA provides air cover and arms via lots of ‘accidents.’)

Blue - Israel (on the SW end of the map)

Agreed. Facile comments about red lines and Assad’s brutality in light of the Islamist nightmare opposing the secular Syrian government (many NON-Syrian, btw) is not unlike the criticism of U.S. SOF water boarding jihadis in Iraq.
