If he called them "thugs" he might have had a point, and I would have agreed with him 100%. But he called them "protestors," which has a very different connotation in this context.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that by calling these mutants PROTESTORS he actually legitimizes the thuggery and animal-like behavior he was criticizing.
