Social media is the way to go and Trump has been doing fantastic with it.
But those here that have been caterwauling for TV ads, well, I hope they are happy. They have their damn TV ads. But in my opinion, they aren't worth a plugged nickel.
Sam seniors STILL watch TV and they are the STRONGEST voter block, I am a senior but still a strong internet user due to FR, my mom on the other hand is TV all the way!!!

My MIL only gets her news from CNN. She won’t vote for Hillary but is inclined against Trump (not enough experience). Ads would get to her.
Earlier it was $100m. Now it’s $140m?
We can debate effectiveness-—I agree in large part TV is of diminishing returns-—but I did say about two months ago when everyone was whining that Trump wasn’t spending enough on ads that he would unleash holy airwave hell in mid-September.
Every sports bar in the country will be playing Trump ads during game this fall. If you aren’t one watching them you’ll be hearing others talking about them.
Making his opponents apoplectic with rage and prone to stupid errors is a tactic that served him well during the primaries. And it is very likely to work even better against a once hugely over confident campaign that now finds itself in a real fight. Clinton has been known to fly into Hitler-like profanity laced rug chewing rages and Trump's just the kind of guy to exploit that sort of weakness.
While I agree with you in general that ads don’t seem to carry the weight they used to, it is still nice to see Trump going on the offensive on the airwaves. You have to admit that Hillary is a ripe target and it keeps her on the defensive.

This is an unusual election year. Normally, negative ads are quite effective at driving a candidate’s negatives up. I’m not sure how effective negative ads about HRC will be. Most voters, including many who are voting for HRC, already know she is a liar and a crook with serious health problems. So negatives on HRC will just tend to say something people already believe.
However, positive ads for Trump are probably a good idea. He has very high negatives also and a lot of those negatives were formed from the media onslaught against him. Advertising directly to voters and changing 10% of those folk will have a measurable effect on the election.
Money wasted in my opinion. Nobody watches commercials on TV anymore. Nobody.

Don’t kid yourself. I haven’t owned a TV for 15 years, but I have many friends and relatives who know nothing about the current election other than what they see and hear on TV. This is especially true of seniors, but even the 30/40 year- olds will sit and watch evening TV hour after hour.
