Internet freedom is now at risk with the presidents intent to cede control to international interests, including countries like China and Russia, which have a long track record of trying to impose online censorship, said Stephen Miller, Trumps national policy director, on Wednesday.
Internet experts call such criticisms off-base.
Under the new ICANN regime, nations will be able to censor content no more than they are now, Jim Waldo, a professor and chief technology officer for Harvards School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, writes in an email. These worries are more evidence that the people voicing them dont understand how the technology works.
In fact, moving away from US control may be able to preserve free speech by keeping the system free from government control.
The best defense against foreign governments exerting control over the Internet is to finish the transition on time, the Center for Democracy & Technology and other advocates of Internet freedom wrote in a joint statement earlier this month. The transition of these functions away from the US government removes an excuse for authoritarian countries to demand greater oversight and regulation of Internet issues.

This sounds like the excuse leftists say we need more muslim invaders, so they don’t turn to terrorism.
Oooh! Harvard!
Sounds a lot like ‘Obamacare’s critics don’t understand it.’
Well I do understand the technology and the reality is that this is the thin end of the wedge. Anything controlled by others can be withheld, threatened, embargoed, or simply encumbered by more bureaucracy.
Moreover, this is a solution in search of a problem.
My message to the liberals wanting to give it away, “You didn’t build that. It’s the United States taxpayers that built that. It’s not yours to give away. “
The U.S. government is no more trustworthy than the old Soviet Union, as far as I'm concerned.
Sounds like we’re being Grubered again.
I spent over 25 years in the IT industry doing everything from writing specialized accounting tools to automating production lines and working on filter software for sonars.
I'll take my own "geek" advice which is that this nation needs to retain control and in fact, make it illegal for any later Congress to permit anyone except the US to be in control.
Or what Mr. Trump can do. I have noticed interest by leaders in other countries in Mr. Trump. Could it be that the election is over and Trump won?
ICANN is just the internet address book. It assigns names/addresses upon request.
yeah, what a load of horse ####.
Obama came out against those trying to delay it. Nuff said.
Once again, The Great Obama hasn’t explained it well enough to us idgits.
The transition of these functions away from the US government removes an excuse for authoritarian countries to demand greater oversight and regulation of Internet issues....
Well now they wont have to demand it. They’ll just be able to do it.
Anyone counting on the UN to be fair.
Type in Israel 2 years from now and the first 100 responses will be different images of the devil.

Harvard has lost it's credibility with many given their history with credentialing Obama and firing Lawrence Summers.
Hence, I take the word of Ted Cruz over Jim Waldo.
How many of these experts believe in one world government also?
Stop! No one wants your coherent logic and restrained, informed point of view. This is a thread for paranoid and overblown rhetoric!!
Getting internet control away from the U.S. just helps the globalist cause. The (massive number of) control freaks in our government will combine forces with like-minded compadres worldwide, so a true form of heavy-handed globalism can begin.
"We're all gonna die! EEEEK!"
All we need to know is, Obama started this, Obama wants this, Obama is screaming not to delay.
>> The (massive number of) control freaks (RATs) in our RAT-government, will combine forces with like-minded compadres (other fascists, statists and Communists) worldwide,
