Jimmy was an Annapolis grad who, when given the opportunity to run the engineering department of the 2nd US nuclear sub, decided to go back home to take over the family farm. I don’t think Adm Rickover ever forgave him for that. Seawolf had a lot of problems with it’s reactor systems (it was an ambitious design). But you have to wonder if the loss of command-continuity during the building & fitting out period had something to do with it.

Wellllllll...OK. I think Jimmuh was on a par, though. His career as Naval officer AND Gov. were not exactly distinguished, if I remember correctly. Even though he had Lester Maddox on his ticket.
