I tend to agree with you. The babies look well cared for. And alive.

Many years ago, before today’s excesses, babies were often placed in open dresser drawers.

You’re right. Those babies look absolutely fine, and babies have been placed in dresser drawers, on a regular bed with pillows, heck! On the mothers back in a sling!

What is so heartbreaking?

I was gonna say drawers to a chest. My mom was one. Still here 78 years later. And no PTSD over the trauma. The babies look like they have pretty good duds on. As long as they are warm and fed, I don’t think it matters so much over their bed quarters at that age.
