I think your assessment is spot on. He took advantage of a strong cutlure, and stripped it in a slow and methodical way to his own personal advantage. Slower than the usual corporate raiders, but same effect.

Obviously didn't strip out all institutional know how, the company still does okay in some hi-tech fields. But the employees are beat like rented mules. Loyalty is a one-way street these days.
