Trump support surges in Pennsylvania towns
Financial Times ^

Every square foot of Hazleton evokes America’s grand immigrant story. From the Irish cemetery on Donegal Hill, to the now closed Slovak Holy Trinity Church, this once booming Pennsylvanian coal town was a magnet to the huddled masses who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life. In 1883, Hazleton became the third city in the world (New York was the first) to install an electric grid. It was literally a shining city on a hill.

Today, as Donald Trump’s campaign steps up its focus on Pennsylvania — if he wins its 20 electoral college votes he could take the White House — Hazleton is a draw to a new kind of outsider. In 2000, barely 4 per cent of the city’s population was Hispanic. In the space of less than two decades that share has risen to almost half. Most of the incomers are from the Dominican Republic. More than three-quarters of Hazleton’s school children are Hispanic.

Read the article earlier. Where is Hillary’s ground game? FT also does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants. Immigrants do.

After decades of living in NY I have finally escaped and moved to a small town in PA. I can tell you that Trump signs and bumper stickers are everywhere. I have seen exactly 1 pro hIllary sign.

I live outside of Pittsburgh. It seems DJT has much, much better support here than Romney. Added to that, I just don’t see the enthusiasm for Hillary that I have seen in years passed for democrat candidates. I think DJT will win western PA. He will definitely win the middle of the state as well. It will come down to Philly and fraud.

Sort of strange that the whole article seems based on anecdotals from one random small town.

There is just nothing to get excited about with her. What does she bring to the table, besides pandering to illegals and saying Trump is racist.

Philly is going to need 300% voter participation to make it happen.

Not out of the question, of course...

In private I’m sure many Democrat strategists and consultants have conversed among themselves that Hillary is toast, and are looking only to save the Dems in Congress now.

Right. Wasn’t there a county or district that had something like 110% turnout during the last presidential election?

It’s not exactly a “random small town.” Hazleton was in the news a few years ago because of some interesting measures the mayor was taking to deal with the flood of illegal immigrants. I think one of the measures was that property owners who rented to illegal aliens were subject to prosecution.

I think there is a really good chance Trump will win Pennsylvania. Mostly because Trump has enlisted a large army of volunteers to watch every polling place in Pennsylvania (the New Black Panthers can’t be outside the polling places anymore!) and because I think even western Pennsylvania will be high majority in favor of Trump.

I think you're on to something.

There's something else at work here, too. There was a story a couple of days ago about the Democrats' fading chances of winning control of the U.S. Senate. That would be an astonishing turn of events, since 2016 had been shaping up as a year when Democrats could EXPECT to win control of the Senate. There are 34 Senate seats being contested this year. Only ten of those are currently held by Democrats. The Republicans have to defend 24 seats, many of them in swing states and two of them with no incumbent (the Republicans in Indiana and Louisiana are retiring).

Many of the GOP senators who were considered vulnerable running very well against Democratic challengers -- even in states that Hillary Clinton might need to win in order to beat Trump.

If the 2016 election shapes up this way, it is going to be a disaster of historic proportions for the Democrats.

FWIW, Hazleton is in in Luzerne County, which has matched PA as a whole within one percent in the last three Presidential elections.

It was 52-47 for Obama last time, and is currently 52-37 for Trump. That 15 point turnaround in less than four years is absolutely amazing.

I traveled in the last 2 days from SW PA into the middle of WV. Had to go to some compressor stations in the middle of no where. I started counting the campaign signs. (I was on a lot of back roads). Total trip 268 miles. Counted 19 Trump signs ZERO Hillary signs.

Philly suburbs will go big for Trump.

Democrats just don’t like Hillary, don’t care about her and see no point in voting for someone who will lose.

Trump will take PA.

37% for Hillary in bellwether Luzerne? Those are low numbers for a Democrat.

She’s polling 32% in IN, 35% in MO and a record low 29% in ARK.

Hillary is done.
