Australia’s prime minister introduced legislation to Parliament on Wednesday that would allow a public but non-binding vote on gay marriage early next year.

The state’s civil law in the modern era came to determine the definition of marriage for the majority of people. The state decides what it will recognize as the institution of marriage based on whatever judges, pols, or the voting majority happens to believe at any one time. That will be marriage to most, no matter how outlandish or ridiculous or disgusting. Pope Leo XIII warned about this happening 130+ years ago.
