A 24-year-old former substitute teacher from Iowa who was arrested in July after admitting to a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student says he had swept her off her feet with love notes scribbled on Post-Its.
Mary Beth Haglin, of Cedar Rapids, has been charged with misdemeanor sexual exploitation by a school employee in connection to her six-month tryst with a male student at Washington High School.
On Wednesday, Haglin pleaded not guilty to the charge in writing, and her trial date has been set for November 14. If convicted, she could face up to two years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
Haglin was hired as a substitute teacher in January and was terminated in May at the conclusion of an internal investigation by school administrators. An earlier probe conducted in February had failed to prove any wrongdoing on Haglins part.
Both investigations have since been labelled as ineffective by the school district and led to the resignations of three high-ranking officials, reported The Gazette.
It is believed that Haglin and the victim had been in a sexual relationship for almost the entire duration of her tenure at Washington High School.
Speaking to Inside Edition this week, the 24-year-old woman apologized for the hurt she has caused, but claimed that it was her underage lover who seduced her.
He would come into my classroom, grab a Post-It, write something and stick it to my desk on his way out, she said. One note read, I love you so much, my empress.

no that wuz why they join the army rape European women and girls.
“Are you my homework? Because I feel like I should be doing you, but I’m not”.
I got that line from a fellow FReeper. Sadly, I am married and will never get to use that line.
My only sliver of happiness will come from someone else using that line.
Please, someone use that line and tell me about it so I may live once again, albeit vicariously.
Send her to my house while on probation for a good spanking? Yes please.
“I’m hot for teacher! I don’t feel tardy!”
Well, if she’s 234 she certainly should have known better.
That story doesn’t hold water. On the contrary, I think it’s the other way around.
Just another in a long list of reasons to homeschool.
Shootings there are way up in recent years.
She’s ugly. She will get 2 years.
If she were attractive, she would get probation.
A lot of states are passing laws toughening penalties for this.
And immediately they are being challenged in court. With claims that consensual sex between two people above the age of consent cannot be criminalized.
Upon what is that based? Why, SCOTUS rulings meant to please the gay mafia, of course!
this is why I think a teacher should be thirty years old or have taught younger kids for at least five years before teaching high school....24 is just to close in age to the student. you get an immature twenty four year old and some seventeen year old kid and you have problems with out it even being a case of the twenty four year old being predatory in there behavior... when I say predatory I am referring to those that are just looking for sex nothing more nothing less. I am also not condoning the relationship. when you are a teacher you should be professional with your students no mater what the age. I would have problems with a university professor dating his student if they were the same age.
“My French teacher was kinda hot. Twenty-something, red hair. The funky free-spirited chick that guys always went for in 70s movies.”

Oh, yeah, the hippy-esque students-friend type gal teachers/student teaches could be nice.
I think it’s been happening for a long time. It’s just that in the Internet age, it’s no longer just local news. Yes, we see one here every week or so, it seems, but averaged over the thousands of schools nationwide, it’s still uncommon.
I don’t think these teachers are chasing after the debate team captain. More likely they are going after the buff varsity athletes.
Post-It notes? When did this crime happen? 1986? That would make him 47 now. Is he still traumatized?
How can you possibly leave love notes without Snapchat? Or other social media du jour?
Absolutely I’d fire her and yank her licence, she should not be a teacher.
But judicial punishment? No. Sex offender list? Egads no.
Probation? Also no. Probation officers are overrun with actual criminals to keep track of, they don’t need to waste their time with her.
Send her your way? Sure, that’s fair. ;D

I know, but it’s hard to pass up picking on Iowa. Wisconsin even more so.
:D
some of these young snowflakes are just that ...flakes....seems to run rampant in the teacher profession....sorry, that’s just the way it seems...young women especially....just seem totally clueless....

On the plus side, we now know of one student who can write. And, it would seem, one who can spell “empress” and have some idea of what it might mean.
But when I was 17? Oh yeah... ouch...
What happened to all the teachers with scowls, moles and cankles that I grew up with?
” ... its utterly ridiculous she was arrested for sex with a 17 year old.”
I agree that we have criminalized too much behavior that is simply inappropriate or immoral. IMO, the teacher should be fired but not jailed. The student was a “subordinate” to the teacher so there was a legitimate power imbalance in the relationship. In many organizations, an unreported relationship between a subordinate and a supervisor gets pink slips for both of them.
Wow. This poor wench must be stuck in self-destruct mode.
Her mama must be so proud.
