Why is a pump action preferred to a semi automatic?

I have both and the pump is sometimes awkward.

IMHO it is not.

The semi-auto is faster for follow-up shots, has less recoil, and you can return fire with one arm disabled. These advantages far outweigh the lower cost and simplicity of the pump.

'Cause the pump action sounds scarier in the dark?

It’s not preferred, it’s inexpensive therefore attractive to first time firearms buyers. Just a good place to start without the buyer’s regret.
