Wal-Mart to cut 7,000 back-office store jobs

Wal-Mart is eliminating 7,000 positions in its back offices across the U.S., spokeswoman Deisha Barnett confirmed to CNBC on Thursday.

The cuts, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, affect employees working in accounting and invoicing positions. The reductions will be rolled out over the next few months, and employees will be given the option to move into more customer-facing roles, Barnett said.

Wal-Mart has been looking for ways to put more employees on the sales floor, as it seeks to improve its customer service and keep its fresh foods in-stock. Operating faster and cleaner stores is a crucial part of the company's U.S. turnaround strategy.

I worked in retail for a number of years.
Some of the smartest women I’ve ever met were the ones who
held these back office jobs in the store.

The others were complete raving b***hes who were assigned there because you did not dare put them in front of your customer.

So accountants will now be stacking produce, or they “choose” to quit - saving the company from paying out all sorts of benefits on the process. And, to be “fair,” there’s a merit based longevity system already in place for floor assignments, so when you get done compiling those monthlies and posting them against the cross comparison for the final report, grab a mop.

Nasty, nasty, nasty.

Judging from my recent experiences with retail, I’d say they all could stand to staff more cashiers. It was once unusual to be backed up in a line at the grocery store or dollar store, now it’s every time I go. If they offer self-checkout, I’ll use it in the event of a line, but most of them don’t.

The local Walmart grocery has lines at the self-checkout during peak hours. Since self checkout can only be done one item at a time, while the cashier can do multiples, there are times when the cashier lines are a better bet than the self checkout.

And if the machine malfunctions (unexpected item in the bagging area - put item in bagging area on a continuous cycle as you move the item on and off the table), the cashier line is a sure bet. Just make sure they don’t rotate a bag away from you while you are picking them up.

I worked in a supermarket in the early 80’s.
One of the main attractions of that job to me was the large number of female cashiers 18-23 who were working there.

I think we had 15 registers. At least 12 were nearly always open. Pretty much they all had baggers, and there were guys out stocking the shelves as well.

I was in that same store two months ago, and counted nine employees in the whole building, including the manager.

It’s been something of a joke here for almost as long as I can remember, as to just why grocery stores put in so many checkout lines but never fully staff them. We get a rush on the grocery stores ahead of storms, hurricane, ice, snow. They’re not even fully staffed then. Lines to the back of the store for the ones that are open, but still empty closed lines with unstaffed registers.

There are annoyances and potential snafus with self-checkout, that’s why I only use them if the open checkouts are backed up. I’d hate to self-checkout with a cart full of groceries. That’s a lot of added effort and time, with no payout unless you’re beating a long line elsewhere.

Open more cash registers with live attendees. That would help.

Also, add an attendant/helper for the elderly who operate cash registers and load the plastic bags. Some of them have great difficulty moving heavier items from the conveyer belt to the plastic bag.

As it eliminates all cashiers after 10pm forcing you to go through self checkout.

So fight the crowded lines or go after 10.
