Seventy-four years ago, America was in the midst of World War II. On July 15, 1942, German submarine U-576 sank the freighter SS Bluefields, just before the merchant ship convoy and its U.S. military escorts returned fire and sank the U-boat minutes later off of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Both the Bluefields and U-576 remained undisturbed until their discovery by NOAA in 2014.

Looking at the sonar image it appears that U-576 took a hit to the starboard side of the bow deck gun.

Interesting article and thanks for sharing. On a somewhat related note, I wonder if the U.S.S. Indianapolis will ever be found?

I wonder why no one talks about where all the fuel oil etc. went that was on all the ships sunk in WWII?

I guess the ocean cleaned itself up real good.

So how come we can’t find Amelia Earhart? Her plane that is? Supposedly off reef-Gardner/Nikumaroro Island.

I rather doubt it.

My what a direct hit to the control systems on the sub. And the forward bulge? I assume few, if any, survived.

So how come we can’t find Amelia Earhart?

BIG ocean

DEEP ocean

Tiny airplane (in relation to submarine & merchant ship with known locations at time of sinking)

Lost with all hands. Most submarines were.

Cool.

There seems to have been a plethora of shows about U-Boots on recently. Very interesting stuff.

One thing I found particularly interesting is that early on people would drive out to Long Island, park on the beach and leave their headlights on. All that did was provide the U-Boot commanders with silhouettes of the cargo ships headed up and down the east coast.

Good point. Forty four ships were sunk in the relatively small and shallow Truk Lagoon during WWII. It has fully recovered and is a diver’s paradise today.

I have seen one of the few remaining Lockheed Electra planes like Earharts at the Chino Ca Airport Mueseum. It is small, and in all probably broke up upon crashing. A scrap of aluminum was found on Nikumaroro which has been attributed to the plane. I just don't think there are any large pieces to find at this point. Probably all coral reefed over.

Many sympathetic and NAZI supporter around the NYC metro area till the end of WWII.

Just google the history of the NAZI party in NJ... they had one of the largest summer camps going in the NJ in the 1930’s...largest riots in Hoboken NJ... Nazi and Communist rioting on May day in 1936...

I watched training films from Curtiss Wright and the US Army, they developed anti-sabotage methods still used today to prevent damaged engines leaving wood bridge NJ plant due to so many issues with Nazi sympathizers. Quite fascinating how they developed the system to prevent known sabotage within the employee pool.

Same thing with Grumman on Long Island... I had many a conversation with Johnny Miller, who was a production test pilot for Grumman during the war... almost every plane from 1940-43 time frame had intentional sabotage by the local supporters of the Nazi’s... he stated there were huge issues with the Grumman and Republic plants on LI...

I even heard a few stories from some old timers of intentional piss poor work at the IBM PoughKeepsie plant making the BAR and M1 carbine... it was less of an issue there but still a known problem the old timers spoke of... they even said early on in war effort NAZI sympathizers were quite open.

I write this due to having a great uncle, British Merchant Marine crew member that was sunk in May 1940 off LI leaving byonne NJ with av fuel... he got burned but survived, and served till the 1950’s..
