FAITH OR FEAR?
For whatever does not originate and proceed from faith is sin [whatever is done without a conviction of its approval by God is sinful]. Romans 14:23 Is it possible to allow someone to control and manipulate us, honestly saying we are doing so in faith? Of course not! We know this type of behavior is rooted in fear, not faith. Faith obeys God, but fear is easily intimidated and finds many excuses for disobedience. A person who is a perfectionist, a workaholic, or involved in sexual perversion is just as dependent as someone who is addicted to a chemical substance like tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. If we try to meet the needs of that person at the expense of our own needs, we are co-dependent upon that individual. It is good to help people who have been hurt; but when their emotional needs begin to control us, we are in danger of being led by them and their problems instead of being led by the Holy Spirit of God. Faith causes us to step out and say or do what God places in our hearts, but fear causes us to timidly stay under control and domination. How many times have we heard manipulative people say things like, "I'm old, and you don't care anything about me now," or "I raised you all of your life. I sacrificed to house and clothe you and put you through school, and now you want to just leave me here all alone"? There is a balance to be maintained in such situations. That balance is the Holy Spirit within us to guide us into the truth of each situation. He will provide us the wisdom to know when we are to be adaptable and adjustable and when we are to take a firm stand and be immovable. Always keep in mind that faith obeys God, fear is easily moved by unbridled emotion! From the book New Day, New You: 365 Devotions for Enjoying Everyday Life by Joyce Meyer. Naming God
August 28, 2016
I have now seen the One who sees me.
Genesis 16:13
In his book The God I Dont Understand, Christopher Wright observes that an unlikely person is one of the first to give God a name. Its Hagar!
Hagars story provides a disturbingly honest look at human history. Its been years since God told Abram and Sarai they would have a son, and Sarai has only grown older and more impatient. In order to help God, she resorts to a custom of the day. She gives her slave, Hagar, to her husband, and Hagar becomes pregnant.
Predictably, dissension arises. Sarai mistreats Hagar, who runs away. Alone in the desert, she meets the angel of the Lord, who makes a promise strikingly similar to one God had made earlierto Abram (see Gen. 15:5). I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count (16:10). The angel names Hagars son Ishmael, which means God hears (v. 11). In response, this slave from a culture with multiple gods that could neither see nor hear gives God the name You are the God who sees me (v. 13).
The God who sees us is the God of impatient heroes and powerless runaways. Hes the God of the wealthy and well-connected as well as the destitute and lonely. He hears and sees and cares, achingly and deeply, for each of us.
Lord, You didnt sugarcoat the story of Your people in the Bible and yet You loved themas You love usin spite of all the dirt and drama. You are the God who sees us, and yet we can still run to You.
Read about some of the names that Jesus is given. See The Amazing Names of the Messiah.
God sees us with eyes of compassion.

I went on a LONG motorcycle ride through some of the prettiest seaside southern New England roads that you can imagine, had some chowder, popcorn shrimp, and a lovely pinot grigio, and just got home.

"I VOW TO THEE, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice.
And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace."

Dear God: I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman, Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine feel alone or forgotten.
O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is loving kindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel From all his iniquities.
