If a business is struggling, the person in charge needs to make changes. In a presidential campaign, where there is only so much time until election day, those changes need to happen quickly.

Too bad government doesn’t work this way. Political operatives are rewarded and poor performance in the bureaucracy is ignored. There is no accountability. We all see the difference when we compare the DMV customer experience with, say, the Apple Store.

If KellyAnn Conway can help Trump win, then great. We’ll see what happens over the next few days.

Quite so. In 1980, Reagan fired campaign manager John Sears and his team on the verge of the New Hampshire primary. Why? Reagan heard some disturbing reports, so he solicited the help of conservative GOPe type attorney from NYC Bill Casey to examine his campaign.

After a week of poking around, Casey reported back to Reagan that instead of organizing, his campaign was consumed with internal bickering and was deeply in debt. Reagan then talked Casey into becoming his campaign manager, and, with a victory in New Hampshire, Reagan was on his way to the nomination and the Presidency, with Casey as CIA Director.

In addition, Manafort's position had become untenable. It seems that his work in Ukrainian politics and later efforts at lobbying for Ukrainian interests raised what are now active legal issues. Whether these issues are minor nuisances or risk sending him to the pokey depends in large part on the DOJ -- which at present is in the hands of the highly partisan and unethical Obama crowd. Resignation was Manafort's best option, both for him and Trump.
