Americas veterans are forced to drive hours to get to the nearest Veterans Affairs clinic, wait months for doctors appointments, and are routinely being subject to shameful service (unsanitary medical equipment, etc.). Few people have been fired as a result of the scandal and VA Secretary Robert McDonald has even minimized the situation by comparing it to the challenges of standing in line at Disney World.
In a new statement, Concerned Veterans of America's Vice President of Policy and Communications Dan Caldwell said the VA's treatment of our nation's finest is unacceptable and is urging the passage of an important piece of legislation authored by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA).
The VAs failure to serve our veterans most basic health care needs is unacceptable, and reform is needed urgently," he said. "The Caring for our Heroes in the 21st Century Act would empower American heroes to control their own health care. Our veterans chose to fight for our freedoms. When they get home, they deserve to choose their own doctor.
The Caring for our Heroes in the 21st Century Act is intended to take power away from bureaucrats and place health care back in the hands of veterans. It will, in part, allow veterans to see doctors closer to home and schedule appointments with more flexibility, the CVA explains.

Give Veterans The Care They Earned
Wasn’t this one of the things that Trump said he would be doing if elected POTUS? Somebody now decided its a pretty good idea?
Make Congress use the VA hospitals.
It must be a fluke but my uncle gets really good care at the Brooklyn VA. High white, low red, had him in for bone marrow extraction in no time.
Not as quick with the results, 3 weeks instead of 10 days, but still not bad.
Maybe not as many vets using it?
“Make Congress use the VA hospitals” seems like a good idea but it may not be...we’d never get a appointment then. For example...did you ever see s congressperson in the waiting room at Walter Reed Army Hospital or Bethesda Hospital???? Easy answer NO because they get top priority and care.
AFGE will fight this, as will Hillary crowd.
Pre-empt Trump?
No... This “bill” is an Establishment-sponsored “work-around”.
If you read draft of the “bill”, you will see it does NOT simply change the existing law that REQUIRES a veteran to use a VA hospital to obtain subsidized government health-care. It does not simply give veterans NEW access to Medicare.
Instead, the “bill” creates yet another government-sponsored “non-profit”. This NEW unaccountable entity will simply take over all the assets and all of the patients of the VA.
It simply will be the “old” VA with a “new” name.
Walter Reed and Bethesda are Vet facilities
“It must be a fluke but my uncle gets really good care at the Brooklyn VA. High white, low red, had him in for bone marrow extraction in no time.”
The VA facility at Ft. Hamilton is supposed to be pretty good. Is that where he went? I went to one in downtown Brooklyn back in 82 and it was brutal.
Absolutely, as long as they get no priority. VA would be fixed in a month.
Honestly, men who risked thir life to serve their country, or were wounded in service to their country should get priority over congress-critters.
OK
so I called Congresswoman Rodgers DC office and was told she has been “talking” about this since June...
theres no bill as yet...
she is trying to get others interested in it...
I agree 100 percent.
I agree, but we got the VA instead.
For years I had what I considered to be better care from the VA here than I could receive from private doctors but since Obamacare it seems that a lot of vets who were eligible but had never used the VA health care have now started coming to the local clinic which is within three miles of my house. I can see things going downhill because of the much higher patient to doctor ratio. I am not surprised, I expected this because of Obamacare. Soon there will be healthcare in name only for all but the very rich.
