He started out pretty liberal (and a priest), moved right in the Nixon-Reagan years (and got married twice), and then got really disillusioned with GW Bush. Plenty of people did.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was always under the impression that McLaughlin was a moderate Nixon Republican rather than a conservative per se.

Still, I always liked his persona and his wit. RIP.
