Parents arrested after 7-year-old, who hadn’t eaten for days, tried selling teddy bear for food
Washington Post ^ | 8/15/2016 | Travis M. Andrews

When Officer Steve Dunham met the 7-year-old, the boy was offering to sell his teddy bear.

The little guy must have seemed industrious, standing in front of the CVS at the busy intersection of Second and Main in Franklin, Ohio, trying to hawk his toy on July 7. Most children don’t want to part with their stuffed animals. In this boy’s case, it was a lone source of comfort, but he was desperate.

He hadn’t eaten in days.

Perhaps if he sold the small bear for enough money, he could walk across the street and get a kid’s meal at Subway. At the very least, a Snickers bar from CVS. Those cost mere quarters.

And it must have seemed like a charitable area. One walking the short two blocks from the Great Miami River to the CVS would see the towering spires of at least four churches.

But he wasn’t having any luck.

Still, being downtown and completely alone was likely better than being home. His parents allegedly weren’t even aware he’d left the house.

“It broke my heart,” Dunham told WLWT. “He told me he was trying to sell his stuffed animal to get money for food because he hadn’t eaten in several days.”

I don't click on WaPo links.

Just tell me if Travis ever gets around to listing all the government programs the parents are on.

Looks like the mother has had plenty to eat.

Parents that fail to care for their children can be charged with child neglect and endangerment.

As far as I am concerned, those parents should be locked up for life.

Some people shouldn’t be allowed to have kids, period.

This has been addressed in several duplicate threads over the past few days.

The mother defends herself, says her place “isn’t that bad (sic)” and so on.

Kids look healthy. Father is in the picture. Mother claims that boy didn’t even eat the whole subway sandwich because he just had lunch before going to the store.

House is a dump, but I’ve seen worse.

Only once have I ever had the opportunity to meet the needs of someone who really needed it, a destitute woman in a back block of Nashville. My children and I bought her a meal, and sat and talked with here for about 30 minutes.

I think the conversation meant more to her then the food.

I weep when I see these stories because I beg God daily for chances to help those who need the help. I seldom get to see the real need in black and white like that officer did.

Oh dear God! I can’t stand this! I can’t bear for any creature to be hungry. I feed the birds, I put out carrots for the rabbits and corn for the squirrels! How can people let their child starve? Hell would be too comfortable for these parents!

And what do you bet you and I paid for every morsel this “mother” put in her mouth?

I’ve always wondered if the Clinton Foundation(s) do anything IN THIS COUNTRY and yes, the CHMI (Clinton Health Matters Initiative) supposedly does.. Hillary needs to know that she missed seeing that this family was well taken care of. I wonder where the families are that the foundation HAS helped in this country! Guess that info won’t be forthcoming any time soon.

My wife and I have a policy. When we see anyone with a
homeless, needs food” sign we usually buy them a sandwich, a fruit and a bottle of water. We do not give money.

I wonder why the 17 year old didn’t contact relatives for help? And I wonder if the relatives who take the kids knew how they were living?

Just curious. Did he not like what she made and not eat voluntarily? Was it a case of a mother high or otherwise impaired and no food in the house? Did the child ASK his mom to be fed?

I’m asking here because I don’t want to give the ComPost any clicks.

Note the WaPo was only seven lines into this piece before going out of its way to slam a church.

25 years ago one of my favorite mind-numbing, hand-me-a-beer-and-stay-out-of-my-face-for-an-hour pointless TV shows that I watched to unwind from work, was the original Unsolved Mysteries.

At the time at least every other episode contained the story of some person in their golden years looking to find some long-lost siblings before their time on Earth was done. In almost all cases they were ripped away by over-zealous social workers during the New Deal and shipped off to new families whom officials felt were “better able to take care of them.”

But they never stopped looking for lost brothers and sisters. Sometimes even a struggling, imperfect family is better than the alternative.
