Marines turn to girls high school sports teams for recruits

The U.S. Marine Corps is looking for a few more good women.

And this time the campaign is a bit different. Marine recruiters are turning to girls high school sports teams to find candidates who may be able to meet the Corps' rigorous physical standards, including for the front-line combat jobs now open to women.

Marine Commandant Gen. Robert Neller says he wants to increase the number of women in the Corps to 1 in 10.

"I've told them that 10 percent is where we want to go and they're working on it," Neller told The Associated Press in an interview. "Go recruit more women. Find them. They're out there."

For years, only about 7 percent to 8 percent of the Corps, which numbers 184,200, has been women. It's the smallest percentage of women among all the military services. But on the heels of the Pentagon decision to allow women who qualify to serve in combat jobs, thousands of new infantry, armor and other front-line posts are now open.

Neller said he wants to see women in some of those posts. That order now rests with Maj. Gen. Paul Kennedy, head of the Marine Corps' recruiting command.

Kennedy is aggressively recruiting women for the service. He's sending targeted mailings, changing advertising to better represent female Marines, and traveling the country to meet with coaches and female athletes who may be well-suited for the rigors of Marine service.

In particular, Neller believes female wrestlers are good candidates.

“In particular, Neller believes female wrestlers are good candidates.”

Female wrestlers? I know they exist but I’ve never heard of a specific school with them in my life. Can’t be many of them.

Are they saying that the girls are too dumb to know that the Marines are out there and recruiting?

The Marines obviously received orders from Obama to enact quotas and to recruit women. The Marines are (were) the one service who mission was almost exclusively front line combat focused. Remember the slogan "We Are Looking For A Few Good Men?"

Well, now they are not looking for men. They have been told to recruit women.

Combat is frightening, dirty, demanding, and back breaking.

The women in the article said they wanted to be "pioneers." They believe their goal in life is to be "trail blazers." Reality is much harsher.

I am not saying women cannot serve. I flew with women pilots and served with women in the Air Force. Many of them were fantastic, and still are my friends. But a front line Marine should not be an Affirmative Action appointment.

This is lunacy and political correctness, which by its very definition denies Truth.

More idiocy from the latest in a string of weak Commandants.

There is no place whatsoever for women of any description in combat units. Combat has not changed and never will: it's organized murder and females will only be a disability and a distraction.

The old measure for who was in the "Old Corps" has been changed to when the Marine Corps was a man's outfit.

But all services have been actively recruiting women for decades with the intent of getting more in all fields. What’s new here?

I was in aircraft maintenance when they opened our career field to women. If it was an experiment, it would have failed.

High school girls as Marines? If he cared about their lives, his energy would be better spent promoting Home Economics.

You mean the lesbian marines were recruiting (since they don’t reproduce) new possible lesbians. If I were the administrator of that high school, I wouldn’t let them on campus.

I think women football players would be even better after all Football is the closest thing to war without actually killing people. There has to be thousands of women who play High school ball that could become marines, You would Think. Oh wait....

I know of one personally. She was our supply sergeant and eventually became a warrant officer. Now that she’s out she is a fine police officer (and fitness freak!). They are out there and if they can meet the same standards as men I say let them have the job.

“But Sergeant, it’s so heavy,” said the white, female Army PFC to the black, male SFC, as he lugged a 40-pound UPS she should have been carrying down a flight of stairs as we broke down gear in the early morning hours after an exercise at Fort Campbell. My lasting memory of a enlisted supervisor doing a job the worker bee should have handled. This extends to all based, the field, and downrange deployments around the world. Females in units who can’t carry rucks, change tires, erect shelters, haul Jerry cans, etc. We should be reducing, not increasing, the number of women in the Armed Forces.

yes, but on TV females are always kicking butt (men’s butts) better than any man can do...

if it’s on TV, it must be true, right...?
