NEW JERSEY (WTXF) Some lawmakers in New Jersey have proposed a bill that would have police in the Garden State cracking down even harder on distracted drivers.
And that means some big fines for something as simple as eating while you're behind the wheel. However, not everybody's on board with the proposed bill.
New Jersey has been involved in a constant battle to crackdown on distracted driving. Texting or talking on cell phones while driving is already illegal but some legislators believe that's not enough.
Penalties would be up to $400 for a first offense and a license suspension for multiple offenses. That may seem a little severe but perhaps not when you consider the consequences of distracted driving.
As expected the response from New Jersey drivers was mixed and passionate.
Similar bills introduced in the past have failed mostly because the elected officials couldn't agree on how severe they should be. And talking to New Jersey drivers, that may be an issue this time as well.
The assemblyman says several headlines are misleading saying drinking a cup of coffee behind the wheel or eating would be punishable offensives. He says the hope is to get people to pay attention and hopefully save lives.

Just a wild guess, but I bet Christie vetos it if it passes. Gotta eat those Krispy Kremes during drive time!
I was behind a woman who was eating a burger with her right hand and texting with her left hand while driving. I got beside her and blew my horn continuously.
She looked over at me and angrily gave me the finger while still holding her phone
Lol
Hopefully, when she crashes it will be on her own and her negligence and stupidity will not involve anyone else.
I got the finger from a woman driver about a month ago.
That’s why America is doing so great.
Our women (excepting freepers and kin) have so much class today.
New Jersey can go ahead and impose the Progressive Secular Utopia without me or my money. Will the last wealth-creator who flees the state please leave the EBT system running?
That thread was a content-less blog excerpt. This thread actually says who, what, when and where. I say keep this one.
The proposed solution seems to be to ticket everybody for the cup of coffee in his hand.
Shoulda never let them vote ... ever ... country’s been all downhill since then ...
Wouldn’t it be nice if lawmakers identified the problem before attempting to solve it? On so many interstates, drivers are in a constant state of white-knuckle driving because of semis of such immense length and height with drivers who create impossible situations. A really good law would limit the size of those monstrosities, and be very harsh about their following laws designed to end the hazard they create.

Same thing here...except no hamburger. And it was an angry finger too.
Her kid was sitting in the front seat.
Your honor, I observed the perpetrator traveling eastbound while imbibing what appeared to be a cup of coffee. So I put my coffee down, notified the dispatcher and commenced pursuit.
I generally do not support government doing ONE MORE BLASTED THING to infringe upon the freedom of individuals.
That being said, I came very close to getting t-boned a couple of years back by a woman who had her face buried in an Egg McMuffin.
I suppose I could have sued McDonalds and retired to my own Caribbean island.
