Helen Delich Bentley, the colorful and cantankerous former Maryland congresswoman whose fierce advocacy for the port of Baltimore led to its being named in her honor, died Saturday.
Mrs. Bentley, who was 92, died at her home in Timonium, said longtime aide Key Kidder. She had brain cancer.
She had a long and varied career that took her from The Baltimore Sun newsroom to the Federal Maritime Commission to the U.S. House of Representatives. She ran for governor in 1994 but lost in the Republican primary.
"Congresswoman Bentley worked with tenacity, energy, and passion on behalf of her constituents, making her a rare breed in politics and a role model to public servants across Maryland," Gov. Larry Hogan, also a Republican, said Saturday. "She was a trailblazer for women in media and government, a longtime champion for manufacturing, maritime issues, and the Port of Baltimore which proudly bears her name as an everlasting tribute to her achievements."
He ordered flags in Maryland to fly at half-staff.

This is not the same Baltimore she knew and loved so long ago. That Baltimore is mostly gone, a lot of it burnt up in the Black LIES Matter domestic terrorism of last year.
Maybe there will be a phoenix that rises from these ashes.
Detroit is slowly coming back, ever so slowly.
I remember her in Congress and would always hear her on WCBM.
She was a pistol.
She will be missed. RIP Helen.
It was curious that when she ran for Governor in ‘94, the incumbent Democrat iconoclast/maverick William Donald Schaefer endorsed her in the GOP primary, and had she won over Ellen Sauerbrey, Schaefer presumably would’ve helped her beat Parris Glendening. Although I preferred Sauerbrey (who clearly had the election stolen from her due to voter fraud), Bentley would’ve been far better than Glendening.
Here’s longtime “Human Events” and current Newsmax poltical columnist John Gizzi’s eulogy of Bentley. Sounds like she was a Trump supporter, and spent her final years working to help abused dogs.

On several occasions (7 out of 10 years), Bentley was the most Conservative member from Maryland. Her highest score from the ACU was an 86% in her last year (1994) with a few off-years, but otherwise had a lifetime of 77% (and she was moving rightward the longer she stayed). Only when Roscoe Bartlett came in in ‘93 did he beat her score (as did Marjorie Holt in Bentley’s first term on one occasion). I can see why Gizzi telling her she wasn’t “all that Conservative” that she got mad. I’d take someone with an 86% rating in a heartbeat, that beats my Congressman and Senators.
Thank you for posting this.
HDB was a Republican. A moderate one, to be sure, but here in the People’s Republic, moderate is about as good as it gets.
FReegards, ‘Pod.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
RIP. She was an amazing lady.
