In a sign of growing escalation, Chinas Defense Ministry has called on the countrys military, police and general population to be ready to defend territorial claims in the South China Sea.
In the wake of the Hague-based Court of Arbitrations decision to deny Beijings nine-dash-line territorial claims, tensions in the South China Sea have increased. The United States claims it will continue aggressive military action in the waterway, a move sternly opposed by China.
During a tour of military installations in the coastal Zhejiang Province, Chinas Defense Minister Chang Wanquan appeared to raise the bar, calling for "recognition of the seriousness of the national security situation, especially the threat from the sea."
He also called for preparations for a "peoples war at sea," according to state-run Xinhua news agency.
Changs statements reiterate similar claims made by Chinese officials recently. Earlier this week, one military official speaking on condition of anonymity said that, "We should go in and give them a bloody nose."
"The Peoples Liberation Army is ready," he added.
A separate source with ties to Chinese leadership described the PLA as combative.
"The United States will do what it has to do. We will do what we have to do," he said. "The entire military side has been hardened. It was a huge loss of face."
A highly-disputed region through which roughly $5 trillion in international trade passes annually, most of the South China Sea is claimed by China, though there are overlapping claims by Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
While the Court of Arbitration ruled against Chinas claims, Beijing does not recognize the decision as legitimate.
The US and its Pacific allies have expressed opposition to Chinas construction of a series of artificial islands, claiming Beijing is attempting to establish an air defense zone. China maintains it has every right to build within its own territory and that the islands will be used primarily for civilian purposes.
My late father, a Detroit Golden Gloves champion, knew something about that subject. I'm sure the talent was passed down! Dad's nickname: "Shorty" would make a great sign for the training facilty: SHORTY'S GYM.
I watched with glee as the US archery team defeated the Chinese archery team at the olympics. Here’s some friendly advice for the Chinese. Don’t let your water buffalo mouths overload your egg roll asses. Your fleet will quickly be converted to a junk fleet. Yeah, you’ll get that sinking feeling.
Hey China, don’t be stupid.
If Hillary gets in, you win. Just have to toss her some more cash.
If Trump gets in, you don’t want this fight.
So just chill for a few months.
We were real smart to dump off all that manufacturing capacity to "cheap labor" countries like China. /s
War at sea does not guarantee Victory at sea. Just sayin'
Translation: Go suck a lemon.
It would be a huge mistake to underestimate the military capabilities of the Chinese. Their modern stealthy shore to ship missiles ( fitted with encrypted American guidance systems courtesy of President Clinton) are a very credible threat wherever they are deployed. Simply would not want American capital ships, despite their impressive defensive armament, to be within their range if shooting for some ungodly reason were to actually start. It was the deployment of those missiles in force on the shores of the Persian Gulf, that made the position of the big blue water ships of the US Navy in the shallow, narrow Gulf untenable.
Yeah, we remember when you went into Viet Nam to "teach them a lesson." China lost face. In fact, China lost a whole LOT of faces. Bumbling buffoons.
blah, blah, blah, jingoism, blah, blah, blah...
Why would anyone (except a communist stooge) end an article saying China claims the islands will be mainly for civilian use, when everyone has seen photos of these things with every inch devoted to military aircraft and artillery?
I agree about the damage China could inflict on our expensive naval assets during standoff “misunderstanding” in the South China sea.
In addition, in China’s eyes, now may be the best time to bloody America’s nose since our Commander-in-Chief is the weakest and most ineffective that we’ve ever had since Carter.
We’ve even stated that we’d never launch a first strike nuclear attack, and judging by our middle east and Ukraine red line walk backs, our counter strike resolve and strength is in doubt as well.

Another real smart move. /s
Why is that SOB traitor still walking around free?
And how can anyone seriously entertain the incredibly stupid idea of allowing this corrupt America-hating treasonous crime family back into the WH?
Maybe they are saying that they will be the ones who will be controlling civilian commerce/shipping from now on.
“They have no credible threat against our subs and we would probably go ahead and sink their bogus subs just for target practice.”
This isn’t “Communist” China anymore...
This is the China with all of our former manufacturing, and several hundred million in excess population.
Cut off Chinese goods due to a short fight with China from the American Markets, and what manufacturing is left here grinds to a halt in less than 30 days.
Most people have no idea how entirely dependent we have become on not just finished goods, but parts and supplies from China. Even Wheat grown in America gets shipped to China, processed into gluten, and shipped back across the pacific to be processed into all kinds of products, because things like Government environmental regulations, taxes, and Civil Liability laws have made it cheaper by a significant factor to do so.
“Maybe they are saying that they will be the ones who will be controlling civilian commerce/shipping from now on.”
1/3rd of the world’s commerce already moves on Chinese-owned ships...
And all of it on the coast of China and well within range of the nearest Ohio-class SSBN and all 24 of her D5 missiles. Let her empty her silos and China becomes a memory. And the Chinese know this.
You got it.
Not with the little islamist as CIC.
